NYC folk would be wise to check out this exhibition heading your way in June. Photographer Eric Kvatek has travelled the globe shooting lookbooks for the likes of Kapital, 45RPM, PRPS and recently showed a series shot in Mexico at Nepenthes in March. This exhibition at Mondo Cane in Tribeca displays his vast collection of Japanese indigo, some dating back as early as 1800. A super rare selection of the most beautiful textiles including some spot on on examples of Boro and Sashiko.

We’ve been digging on Alex Katz quietly for some time now. The painter’s work hits with such distinct subtlety that it can take 30 minutes of investigation before the emotional core of a piece starts seeping into you. One that happens, it is almost like the painting is looking at you—unsettling and awesome.
For his exhibition at Tate St Ives Katz brings together over 30 canvases, plus collages and cut-outs, that span the full breadth of his career from the 1950s to now. Given the Gallery’s location on the beach, and the nature of the summer season here, the exhibition places a special emphasis on Katz’s seascapes and beach scenes, as well as images of family holidays and friends, painted in his own seaside retreat of Lincolnville, Maine, where he continues to spend his summers.
Dude turns 85 this year, and seems to be working in finer form than ever. Not-to-miss if you are in the vicinity May 19 to September 23. (it’s nice that)
More looks after the jump…

In 1993, the great Art Spiegelman visited Maurice Sendak and drew the experience for the New Yorker. With the passing of Mr. Sendak, the magazine has unlocked the two page comic – as suggested Neil Gaiman on Twitter. Thank you to the New Yorker for making this available to all.
As well, if you have not read and experienced both volumes of Art Spiegelman’s Maus graphic novels, we strongly urge that you do.

Wallpaper shares some artefacts from the recently opened Bauhaus: Art as Life exhibition. Concentrating on its life as an art-school rather than a design movement, the exhibition lays out personal objects; paintings, photographs, party invitations, handmade gifts…all showing a lighter side to what is often considered a rather solemn modernist movement. “Bauhaus: Art as Life explores the diverse artistic production that made up its turbulent fourteen-year history and delves into the subjects at the heart of the school: art, culture, life, politics and society, and the changing technology of the age.” Running until 12 August, more info here.

Design agency This is Real Art speak to Adam Hinton about his series of photographs taken in and around Shibuya station in Tokyo. Published by TIRA themselves, Hinton searches out individuals among the sea of commuters who travel through the subway everyday. Personal moments, most of which show the subject deep in post/pre work thought, are captured – drivers, smokers, mask wearers…all carrying that world weary look every commuter can relate to. It’s Nice That feature the book alongside an interview with TIRA’s Director Paul Belford on this their first (beautifully designed) publication, available here. (INT)
