Curated Q&A | Vanessa Prager

Selectism - vanessa-prager-01

Curated has a great little Q&A with artist Vanessa Prager:

“Self-taught painter Vanessa Prager reveals her latest works this Thursday (June 2, 2011 to be exact) in a special one-night-only exhibition hosted by Danny Masterson. The venue is fitting for Prager, a painter who finds inspiration in a mix of contemporary narrative and vintage photographs. In anticipation of the show, Prager and I got on the phone to discuss the idea behind Across the Universe and her process.”

Curated turns us onto this:

“Maarten Baas designed the “empty chair” at the request of Amnesty International in support of their campaign against the suppression of activists and to honor the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Liu Xiaobo. The chinese activist was unable to accept the prize in person due to imprisonment.

Baas’ chair, standing five meters, was unveiled last weekend for the 50th anniversary of Amnesty International in Amsterdam.”

Double Helix by Franco Castellucio

Selectism - double-helix-01-curatedmag

Curated turns us onto Castellucio’s sculptures:

“Sculptor Franco Castellucio confronts science and art in his latest work, “The Double Helix XX-XY.” The work images an animated strain of DNA, with sinuous male and female bodies twisting to the top. Castellucio also twists the notion of “survival of the fittest,” his desire being that people confront, in his work, the notion of enduring compassion.”

Video | APEX, Kiya Babzani’s “Indigo”

27 May 2011, 23.00 | Posted in Art | 1 comment »
http://www.vimeo.com/24246371

APEX worked with Kiya Babzani of Self Edge in the acquisitoin of the Japanese denim necessary for the “Indigo” project. “The idea for the work featured in Indigo came from APEX’s personal obsession with jeans, and his desire to experiment with denim as a fine art surface. After some trial and error, he developed a method for stretching denim over wood panel, in place of ordinary canvas, and completely fell in love with the look and feel of it. After this, APEX realized he wanted to do an entire gallery’s worth of his “super burners” all over denim. The aesthetics of the exhibition has roots deep in the graffiti movement, making reference to the self-painted denim jackets most inner city tag artists used to wear in the 1980’s.”

Selectism - material-world-01

David Welch’s latest work ‘Material World’ creates totem poles from everyday objects to ‘encourage debate on consumption’. We’re sure it’ll do just that – and, if not, at least there’s a bunch of great pictures to look at. (Fubiz)
