“Looking At Music,” MOMA

12 August 2008, 21.38 | Posted in Art | No comments »

selectism - looking at music, moma

“In the 1960s, the decade that saw astronauts land on the moon, artists were likewise seeking to expand boundaries of time and space and to have new experiences. At the same time, portable video equipment reached the consumer market—suddenly simultaneity and "now," the present and the past, became content. Musicians led the way in developing new working methods, and music was at the forefront of interdisciplinary experimentation during the early days of media art. This exhibition looks at the dynamic connections that occurred from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s with a display of early media works by Nam June Paik, Bruce Nauman, Steve Reich, Joan Jonas, Yoko Ono, Laurie Anderson, and David Bowie presented alongside related drawings, prints, and photographs by John Cage, Jack Smith, Ray Johnson, and others.”

Organized by Barbara London, associate curator, department of media, Looking at Music is open at MOMA from August 13.

Re-Sampling Ornament at the Swiss Architecutural Museum – Basel

selectism - resampling ornament at the swiss architectural museum, basel

"Exactly 100 years after Adolf Loos wrote Ornament and Crime, a manifesto that effectively relegated ornament in architecture to the peripheries of the discourse, “Re-sampling Ornament” takes a first step towards tracing its re-emergence. For decades the language of architectural ornament has remained largely unspoken, but for a few memorable post-modern architectural experiments. Yet from Owen Jones ‘Grammar of Ornament’ to John Ruskin, Gottfried Semper, Louis Sullivan and William Hogarth – and contemporaries such as Kent Bloomer, a rich vocabulary of opposing and often contradictory theories exists to be readapted, re-sampled, and once again applied at the heart of architectural practice.

Oliver Domeisen’s research at his unit at London’s Architectural Association into the history and contemporary application of ornament in architecture has made it possible to embellish and enrich a mutual selection of new architectural projects with terminology drawn from many dictionaries; allowing for associations and groupings that can identify vital traces of ornament in current practice and at the same time rethink its boundaries, creating a new context within which contemporary projects can be redefined and rethought."

Curated by Domesien and Francesca Fergeson, the exhibition remains on view until September 21. The Swiss Architectural Museum also has a great online component.

A Recent History of Writing and Drawing at the ICA, London

selectism - A Recent History of Writing and Drawing at the ICA, London

“A Recent History of Writing and Drawing is an exhibition that explores the evolving relationship between technologies of communication and their users. It is a project by the programmer / designer Jürg Lehni and the graphic designer Alex Rich, curated by design historian Emily King, and involves a variety of interactive and non-interactive devices for writing and drawing.

The centrepiece of the exhibition is Viktor, a large wall-drawing machine that is controlled by an adapted version of ordinary design software and powered by small industrial motors. On Thursday evenings the gallery will host a variety of speakers – including designers, artists and musicians – who are themselves known for using technologies in more or less orthodox ways. During these events Viktor will trace accompanying material on the gallery wall, the image remaining in place for the following week.

Other exhibits include a machine for creating hole-punched posters, and a specially-adapted handheld printer, and all of the works will allow visitors to explore the relationship between technology and expression. Moving away from the blunt duality of man vs. machine, it is now possible to appreciate the particular qualities of various forms of mechanical and digital mark-making. Technologies can be enjoyed for their poetry and exploited for their spare capacity – their ability to undertake tasks not foreseen by their makers.

Lehni, the creator of Viktor, is interested in the nature of tools, and reworks technologies to suit his own needs, often defying the apparent closure of proprietary software. After seeing one of Lehni’s drawing machines at work, Rich – a deft observer of accidental meaning – opened a discussion with the designer about the machine’s historical and cultural context. Since this time the pair have had an ongoing exchange about the tools of communication and the potential of customised and corralled technology.”

On view at the ICA, London, until months end.

selectism - Gilbert & George Exhibition at the Milwaukee Art Museum

International art stars, performers, photographers, Gilbert & George have challenged the art world since the 1970s, creating in their words "Art For All." They engage directly with pertinent contemporary issues, finding inspiration almost always directly outside their East London door. The pair met at Central St.Martins and established their reputation with a performance piece The Singing Sculptures. Milwaukee Art Museum is one of three US venues to host the Gilbert & George retrospective organized by the Tate Modern. In addition, the museums website features a very well put together online version of the material and a great introduction to the duo for those who are unfamiliar with their work. Check it out here. The live version stays in Milwaukee until September 1.

A rather impressive book has been released in conjunction with the exhibition as well.

highsnobiety - Roberto Cavalli Coca Cola Light Bottles

Usually we would not report about Italian designer Roberto Cavalli. His mens collections are not really our style. Nevertheless we have to give it to him for designing some pretty sexy Coca-Cola Light bottles for the Italian market.

"For Fall 2008, the chic’est bevvy on the block will undoubtedly be Coke Light in bottles designed by Cavalli. The limited run of 300,000 bottles will be distributed exclusively in Italy from September through December. "I had a lot of fun creating three different "dresses" for the legendary silhouette of the Coca Cola Light Contour. They are seductive and feminine, in typical Cavalli style. They’re designed for the world of young people, which has always been a great inspiration to me," notes the designer." Via Fashiontribes.

Something for Cavalli fans and collectors. Keep your eyes open on your next Italy trip.
