“The Forty-Deuce: The Times Square Photographs of Bill Butterworth, 1983-1984″ Book

If you were to ask your uncles who frequented New York City anytime in the 80’s, they will certainly recall visiting some slightly (no, very) seedy joints throughout the square. Before Disney and MTV turned the area into candy land, “42nd Street-Times Square—a.k.a. the Forty-Deuce” was the center of all things normals (or abnormal to some). Photographer, Bill Butterworth, captured the scene through intimate portraits of the people and faces that walked and worked Time Squares.

powerHouse Books collects a year’s worth of Butterworth’s photographs in The Forty-Deuce: The Times Square Photographs of Bill Butterworth, 1983-1984 The Forty Deuce: The Times Square Photographs of Bill Butterworth, 1983 1984 Book collects more than 200 of Butterworth’s photos from the period “capturing the unique street life and street style of the era, but also drawing us deeper in, to the peep shows, sex shops, backroom brothels, dimly lit arcades, and low-budget theatres where the action happened.” This stuff is real life and a moment which we may never see in Time Square again.

Available direct from powerHouse and Amazon The Forty Deuce: The Times Square Photographs of Bill Butterworth, 1983 1984 Book.

Photography: From The Forty-Deuce: The Times Square Photographs of Bill Butterworth, 1983-1984 edited by Hilton Ariel Ruiz and Beatriz Ruiz, published by powerHouse Books.

Michael Dweck – Habana Libre – Photography Exhibition

29 February 2012, 20.30 | Posted in Art | No comments »

michael dweck habana libre 01 Michael Dweck Habana Libre Photography Exhibition
During a somewhat recent trip to Havana, American photographer Michael Dweck was able to gain access to a farandula—a tight group of well-connected artists, writers, filmmakers, musicians, and models. What he discovered was a band of passionate creatives who “merged the artistic integrity of the ’30s-era Parisian salons with the glamor and star-power of the ’70s-era Studio 54.”

The resulting photographs, “Habana Libre,” give an unprecedented glimpse into a more hopeful and vital Cuba than the western world is typically granted even cursory knowledge of. The show’s February 24th opening at the Fototeca de Cuba in Havana broke attendance records (and is up until the end of March, if you can find a way to get there). The easier way by far to get a look at the seductive photographs is to pick up the book.

BB Forever: Brigitte Bardot, the Legend - Photogaphy Exhibition

Vanity Fair takes a look at some stunning photographs of “The Temptress of St. Tropez,” Brigitte Bardot that accompanies their interview with the 77-year old star for their March 2012 issue. Many of the photography in the gallery will tour the United States as part of the ”BB Forever: Brigitte Bardot, the Legend” exhibition appearing at Sofitel hotels in Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, and New York.

The rare visit to the star’s home by the show’s curator, Henry-Jean Servat, is a great read and is available online. Bardot who lives in St. Tropez removed herself from the spotlight and public in the early 70s. Well worth a read.

Terroir Travel Magazine – Issue 2

22 February 2012, 15.00 | Posted in Art, Books & Magazines, Design, travel | 1 comment »

Terroir-01

Terroir is a biannual travel journal out of Singapore. An incredible labour of love, publisher Benjamin Koh prints each page on his home printer, binding and glueing every issue in a process which magculture estimate at about 10 hours per magazine.  We appreciate their efforts. The look of the magazine is beautiful, as is the photography inside. This issue, no.2,  features Japan in all its technicolour glory, a perfect subject for the Terroir treatment.

“Growing up in safe and sheltered Singapore where everything runs like clockwork, even the slightest bit of haphazardness and spontaneity when exploring foreign lands might seem strangely attractive and romantic. Terroir is a bespoke bi-annual magazine that seeks to collaborate with and showcase Singaporean perspectives on travel and what various places meant to them” You’ll have to part with $125 dollars for a copy but rest assured it has been made with care and craft. Find it here.

Watch | ‘Chairs’ by Sarah Illenberger

YouTube Preview Image

A nice bit of stop motion action. Designer Sarah Illenberger hails from Munich and studied her craft at Chelsea College of Art and Central St Martin’s in London. Her medium is just about anything she can get her hands on; embroidery, food, light…the running theme however is a sense of humour and a refusal to take design seriously. With clients such as Audi, Hermes and COS (for whom Sarah created a Selectism window), a light-hearted touch has obviously paid off. In this short video series we see classic midcentury chairs from Eames, Herman Miller, Eero Saarinen throw some moves. More at Ignant.
