Scott Schuman announced on Twitter recently that his successful Sartorialist book was heading for a second volume – coming this September 2012. Like volume one of Sartorialist, volume two will feature the very best of Schuman’s street photography - many of which have not been shown publicly (though some looks are popping up on his feed).
“One of the things that I’ve been working on over the past several months has been saving some of my favorite images, instead of posting on the blog, as exclusives for the next book. Since I’m addicted to sharing the best of what I find with you, it’s really killing me to save these images instead of posting them on the blog, but I think it will make the next book that much stronger!”

Not sure how we missed these on release but a heads up from Arkitip was most welcome. Peter Mendelsund designed editions of classic Franz Kafka works. Mendelsund, art director at Pantheon Books, part of Knopf Publishing, had always hoped to design covers for Kafka novels and talks extensively on his website about the ideas and decisions behind the bold imagery he carries through the set. Under the Schocken Books header, another Knopf off-shoot, he manages to distill key themes running through the son of Prague’s work, into beautiful, deceptively simple designs.
“Whenever I’m asked (and I’m asked with some frequency) which authors I’d most like to design jackets for, I always say Kafka ..There’s just something about Kafka- and this something is so very hard to pin down.” Find them at Amazon.

The quills over at Interview Magazine have delivered a short but informative piece on eclectic Belgian designer Dries Van Noten and his Spring 2012 collection. Van Noten explains why he thrives on limitations, why David Bowie is a great muse and what it means to grow witch hazel in winter.
The article also paints an exciting picture of the new collection: “… the juxtapositions between imagination and practicality abound: technical sportswear fabrics like paper-thin nylon are paired with elegant, slender leather belts or a silk jumpsuit; shorts are placed over pants in a subtle reference to the functionality of a fly-fisherman’s uniform; and a bright yellow raincoat is decorated with black adhesive bonding on the outside instead of its interior.” We’ll keep our eyes peeled for more looks.

I Love You Magazine is the print mag that represents a female point of view for the most part, but that does not stop us from enjoying the oversized format of the magazine with its overlay gloss covers and matte finish papers on the inside. Tyra Banks gets the cover this month and she does open up a bit for the independent publication. We share some of our favorite looks after the click. Pick it up at better newsstands for the woman in your life.

Image retoucher Steve Bland (a.k.a The Great Blandini) and Interbrand Australia got together to create this attractive and informative brochure, showcasing Bland’s mad photoshop manipulation skillz. The whole booklet is hand drawn in ink, including the text and includes ten tricks as well some advanced level wizardry in the form of the sawn in half woman and Lion face man. Printed on recycled card and stitched on a sewing machine, this is an incredible piece if design. More at CR blog.

One of the take homes from this past Pitti was a strong periodical from the minds behind Rolling Stone Italia.
Specially produced for the Italian reader during Pitti and Milan Fashion Week, Rolling Stone Italia’s Rock & Roll Style, Volume 1 is a well thought out men’s fashion and lifestyle publication that is of very high production. Photography and topics inside the publication remain current and tend to the needs of the Italian gentleman reading them. Inside readers will find everything from fashion tips, reviews, to detailed schematics of Brooks Saddles and Victorinox knives.
Props should be given to the staff at Rolling Stone Italy for putting this issue together. Clearly they worked overtime in bringing this special project to the market. It looks fantastic as you can see from my well read copy above.
If Rock and Roll Style featured split Italian/English text, it would give many of the men’s magazines on the market today a serious run for their money. Did we mention that it is a free publication?

Czech creative collective OKOLO pay tribute to Italian architect and designer Carlo Mollino with their usual innovative approach. The book encourages the reader to delve deeper into Mollino’s life, in an interactive manner, by assembling paper models representing the man’s work and passions. Bonus – the finished products also look pretty cool, educational as well as aesthetically pleasing, right?
“Mollino became a modern Renaissance man whose production embraced the entire cultural and technological world of his time thanks to his undisguised love of life and everything that our world offers. The book is divided into six basic chapters. Apart from a text on a specific theme, each part brings a materialized symbol of Mollino’s creativity. Thus, the reader can assemble miniature models of Mollino’s fascinating projects, implementations, and symbols related to Mollino’s life”
