Recipe | Broccoli in a Cream and Cheese Sauce

A little scouring on the net brings some wonderful food discoveries. This one comes from Croatia and is a recipe for broccoli in a smoked cheese sauce (though we are sure you can substitute another favorite into the dish). The best part of the recipe: it’s quick and easy to make.

Beer | Upslope Foreign Style Stout

09 March 2012, 17.30 | Posted in Food & Beverages | No comments »

upslope foreign stye stout beer Beer | Upslope Foreign Style Stout
Where canned craft beer from Colorado is concerned, Oskar Blues has made the biggest dent nationally with their Dale’s Pale Ale, but Upslope brewery has just as much flavor and intrigue dripping off of its aluminum, and, we think, a much better set of design aesthetics. Located in Boulder—only a few miles away from Oskar, which is in Lyons—Upslope’s charm is in its clever restraint. The ingredient list on each can, for instance, begins with “snow melt” rather than “water.”

“Sometimes called an export stout, our take on a traditional Irish style is roasty but corduroy smooth and well-balanced both in malt character and hop bitterness,” they tell us. We agree on all counts. It looks amazing in a goblet, but tastes just as good pulled from a backpack in the wild (or in a movie theater). Only 200 barrels were made of this limited edition brew (the first in a series), so you’ll have to hustle to get some.

How did the molten chocolate cake make its way from Michel Bras’s restaurant in Laguiole, France to the Wal-Mart freezer case? What happens, exactly, when bartenders spank mint? ”

Nendo 1% – New Additions

nendo 1 Nendo 1% New Additions
Lots of nifty ideas at play here as Japan’s Nendo unveils some new additions to their one-percent collection. Why one-percent, you ask? Because of each design only 100 pieces are made, meaning if you buy one of any of them, you own one-percent. We’re tempted to snatch up several percentage points, as every piece has something novel to brag.

Stacking is a big theme, with cups and flower vases piling up in artfully ingenious ways. Coffee guzzlers we are, and the single cup drip system pictured above is most alluring (there is a small hole in the bottom of the top saucer-cup piece). When our systems cannot safely process any more java, we have been known to switch to tea, and the tea cup set makes that shift more alluring—for the teapot and cups have little wooden lids that double as spinning tops. Handsome Coffee – Bar and Roasting Works

15 February 2012, 20.30 | Posted in Food & Beverages | 1 comment »

handsome 4 Handsome Coffee Bar and Roasting Works

Handsome Coffee Roasters has been in the artisan coffee game for almost a year, but just this week opened their combination roasting facility and cafe in Los Angeles’ Arts District. The handsome trio behind the buzz—Tyler Wells, Michael Phillips and Chris Owens—left lofty posts at Intelligentsia to start Handsome and their new space is evidence of a profound commitment to the bean.

Handsome worked with WoodSmithe (which has worked with clients ranging from Levis and Converse to Native Son) on construction of the facility, where a 13-foot glass and metal wall gives patrons in the open and minimal cafe a full view of the roasting works. This is the anti-Starbucks in many respects: there’s no wi-fi, no pumps of syrup and no charitable bottled water—just coffee, organic whole milk, a slim menu of beverages and a selection of pastries from Proof Bakery. Handsome also has a small walk-up coffee bar opening shortly at Demi Monde, a cocktail lounge near Wall Street in New York, if you’re on the opposite coast. As for the coffee, it is damn good.

Diane von Fürstenberg for Diet Coke Limited Edition Bottles

Diane von Fürstenberg for Diet Coke Limited Edition Bottles

In a bit of news that almost makes us want to drink some Diet Coke, fashion icon Diane von Fürstenberg lends her sensibilities to the low-calories soda for some bottle wraps that celebrate her knack for moving prints.

Following in the footsteps of old Karl Lagerfeld—who designed a series of bottles last last year (and who supposedly dropped 90 pounds in 2001 by drinking only Diet Coke and eating steamed vegetables)—Fürstenberg’s collector’s edition comes with four bottles and is priced at a bubbly $30. One-hundred-percent of the proceeds go to the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health in support of The Heart Truth program for women’s heart health research. The beverage inside still tastes like melted Styrofoam.

snuff 1 Feature | Snuff All the Cool 18th Century Kids Are Doing it

The history and current day legacy of snuff is one not often spoken about. Here in the USA, I have yet to meet someone who indulges in the age old habit of snuff, but lucky for us, Martin Pilkington across the pond knew exactly where to go to get an inside look at the current day “popularity” of snuff, the paraphernalia around the habit, as well as a little of its dark side. Yes, snuff.
