Transit Chairs and Tables by Boris Bally

Selectism - Transit Chairs and Tables by Boris Bally

There is a cold essence to these “Transit” chairs and table from Boris Bally. Without overstating the obvious, the use of the old transit signs works based on the colors and flair they give. I’m not so sure about sitting in them though.

“The transformation of  recycled street signs  celebrate a raw American street-aesthetic. The unique markings and patina were earned on the road. Created with the precision of Boris’ skill as a sculptor, jeweler and industrial designer, the pure lines of the chair perfectly offset the graphics of the recycled signage. Each edge is rounded to a smooth finish. Transit chairs are made individually (based on current signage stock) in Boris’ studio, NO two chairs are alike. The stainless steel hardware is rust proof. Recycled champagne corks inserted on the bottom of all chair legs protect floors and provide added stability.”

Fox Brothers Furniture Studio

Curated reports, “Located in Newburyport, Massachusetts, Fox Brothers Furniture Studio has been producing craft furnishings since 1983. Over that time the studio has moved from New Jersey and undergone three name changes. What has not changed is the inventive quality shown in the current selection of desks.

They make, of course, all sorts of furniture. I’ve highlighted the desks primarily because I think the Rumble Desk (above) so superb. Check out the full offerings at Fox Brothers.”

Standard-Chair

selectism - Standard-Chair

Standard-Chair, predicated on simple and modern chairmaking by Japanese designer Koji Katsuragi, applies a contemporary aesthetic to traditional English Windsors. The subtle use of two different woods, note the contrast from arm to the rest of the chairs, is fantastic. Equally excellent is Katsuragi’s delicate manipulation of line – never straying too far from traditional blueprint but stamping each chair with a unique conception of the style. The bench above is a personal favorite.

Standard-Chair is just one of many exhibitors showing at 100% Design at Earl’s Court in London this week (September 23-26, 2010).

selectism - Sé Collection II by Jaime Hayón

British luxury furniture brand Se have launched its second collection during London Design Week. The new furnishings are designed by highly lauded Spaniard Jaime Hayon. Included are chairs, mirrors, sofas, and tables. In full, the objects represent Hayon’s first full line of furniture.

Inspiration is drawn from a good range of things – beetles for the “Beetley” seating and glassware for the “Flute” tables.

Curated reports, “Atelier Pfister brings together eleven young Swiss designers to produce a collection of solidly crafted, “radical” material. Sure, the pieces have a touch of Scandinavian minimalism about them, but also exhibit a charming quality and range that is hard to deny. The bed frames and seating furniture are highlights.”

Leather Lounge Chair from Pastoe

leather chair 01 curatedmag Leather Lounge Chair from Pastoe

Furniture from Curated. “Designed in 2004 by Maarten Van Severen, this “Leather Lounge Chair” strikes a strong profile – both from the side and front/back. It is from the latter that the chair is most dramatic, the single arm taking shape of a wing. That movement, however, is as straightforward as the line of the piece. It is minimal, to be sure, but manages a distinctive footprint. The chair is produced by Pastoe, a Dutch firm that has been in the business of furniture since 1913.”

D-Build’s “Reclaimed” Materials Marketplace

Selectism - D-Build's "Reclaimed" Materials Marketplace

D-Build’s new marketplace may well be the “Etsy” for reclaimed materials, as Core77 mentions. Like Etsy, you’ll find an extraordinary collection of product designs that use old up-cycled materials to form incredible objects from bed frames, to benches. “In the Products section they sell finished products like Arbor & Taylor’s Lincoln series of furniture (above), all made from reclaimed lumber; those looking to do their own projects should check out the Materials section, where you can buy random hunks of old floor beams, planks, boards, framing, and even entire ripped-out walls. Design something up, build it, and sell it; do it right and you’ll make your money back, and then some.” An awesome idea.

From Curated –

Barcelona-based Marina68 produces some fantastic furnishings.  Partners Rafel and Cristian experiment with material contrast (metal, cork, fabric) and the results are quirky without losing site of functionality. Their work in cork, especially, hits the mark – sustainability and design integrity mixed to a rare degree of excellence.

Desk and Chair by Josh Finke

Furniture from Curated

Influenced by stalwarts of California design Green & Green and Sam Maloof, furniture maker Josh Finke has produced a solid set of table and chair. The inspiration comes primarily in the craft (exposed joinery, etc.) and there is a discernible Green & Green aesthetic. I’m most tickled by the movement of the stretchers… which I think are lovely.
