selectism - Trick by Sakura Adachi

A great space saving design for the bookish nerds among us.

Sakura Adachi’s “Trick” is manufactured by Campeggi and fuses two chairs and a table to form a modular bookcase. With a simple movement, the shelving becomes a simple dinning table for two, or a clean workspace.

Adachi was born in Japan and received her MA in Industrial Design from Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design.

Part of the Well Considered Collection, Conran’s the “America Chair” brightens up industrial chic. Yes, your eyes have not deceived, it is just a folding metal chair. Available in four colors, the chair doesn’t hide the simplicity of its origins.. like the celebrated stacking plastic chair, the folding metal chair has an everywhere, everyman quality.

In short, the “America Chair” is an anonymous design classic.

selectism - Coffee Bench by BEYOND Studio

Karolina Tylka, of Polish design studio BEYOND, cares about smart use of space. The adjustable nature of her “Coffee Bench” speaks directly to this concern, the movable elements allowing for different size seating and table top options. Tylka’s inspiration – finding space for a coffee in the garden – is as simple as the solution. However, the formation of the modular elements of the bench proves notable sophistication. hopeless diamond sofa 01 curatedmag The Hopeless Diamond Sofa

Christopher Stuart, the American designer behind LUUR Studio, makes mountains from the mole hills of Home Depot. Inspired by a folded paper cup, the Hopeless Diamond Sofa utilizes copper plumbing pipe and shipping blankets. The resulting love seat, rather elegant if we must say so, celebrates the aesthetic possibilities of everyday materials. Check, for example, the pattern achieved by the shipping blanket.

Le Corbusier Furnishings Revived by Cassina

selectism - Le Corbusier Furnishings Revived by Cassina

Those with a love of mid-century modernist will certainly celebrate Cassina’s revival of Le Corbusier furnishings. Wallpaper* reports, “Modernist master Le Corbusier had strict design principles, which he applied just as rigorously to furniture design as to his more widely known architectural projects. For him, ‘the smallest pencil stroke had to have a point, to fulfil a need, or respond to a gesture or posture’, recalled Charlotte Perriand, his long-time furniture collaborator. This ruthless purity of approach paid off, making his designs as relevant today as they were over half a century ago – so much so that Cassina has just revived four of his remarkable pieces for its ongoing ‘Cassina I Maestri’ collection, started by the great man himself in 1964.”

The collection includes boxes, tables, and writing desks of utmost simplicity.

selectism - New Harbor Lounge Chair from Thos. Moser

Over the past few years, the Thos. Moser brand has branched away from traditional American furniture forms and taken a few risks with line and overall aesthetic. David Moser’s latest design, the “New Harbor Lounge Chair and Ottoman,” is indicative of this experimentation.  While claims of gravity defiance are easily dismissed, the lightness of stance is undeniable.

Bside Bed by Frederico Bergese

selectism - Bside Bed by Frederico Bergese

Spotted on Industrial Design Served, Frederico Bergese’s “Bside Bed” mixes a graceful bent wood frame with a hidden technological core. The sweeping upper portion is far from superfluous, housing an internal light that functions (clearly) for reading.

Certainly, not to suit every taste. But, certainly an inventive take on a typically narrowly explored form.

Versus “Tosom 2″ Chair

selectism - Versus "Tosom 2" Chair

Young, Norwegian designer Marte Frøystad champions informality with her “Tosom 2″ chair from Danish firm Versus. Frøystad, who runs the design studio Frøystad + Klock, essentially creates the type of seating furniture that invites users to curl up with a good book… or with a lover (think twosome). Or, to otherwise recline free of worry. The seat is formed of wooden frame and polyurethane, and sits on stainless steel legs.

Versus “Brick” sofa has had a good amount of publicity the last few days. The “Tosom 2,” while not as sculptural, deserves attention too.
