Jazz Covers – LP Designs from the 1940s to 1990s

Jazz Covers Book 01 Jazz Covers LP Designs from the 1940s to 1990s

Taschen have put together this new edition of Jazz Covers Jazz Covers LP Designs from the 1940s to 1990s, a sizeable volume of exceptional Jazz LP covers dating back to the 40s. The kind of vinyl you buy purely for the cover, this brings together hundreds of designs across two books, with an emphasis on the colourful midcentury atomic style graphics that covered everything from food packaging to cushion covers. Helpfully, each record is accompanied by it’s illustrator’s name, photographer, label etc, so plenty of hard info to geek out on.

Taschen have also included “special features for jazz lovers include a top-10 favorite records list by leading jazz DJs such as King Britt, Michael McFadden, Gilles Peterson, Andre Torres, and Rainer Trüby, as well as interviews with legendary jazz personalities Rudy Van Gelder, Fred Cohen and Ashley Kahn.” Even if jazzing out in a leather recliner and cashmere sweater isn’t your thing, this is an incredible overview of design through the decades.

Available in May from Amazon Jazz Covers LP Designs from the 1940s to 1990s.

Watch | Marley by Kevin McDonald – Released Today

Marley Doc Watch | Marley by Kevin McDonald Released Today

Released today, Kevin McDonald’s (State of Play, The Last King of Scotland) Marley looks to be one not to miss. Following the life and music of a legend, this uplifting documentary perhaps looks past his many flaws and indiscretions a little too much to be described as thorough. The film places Bob’s rise firmly in the context of Jamaica and Rastafarianism as it stood at the time, offering up something for those who wouldn’t describe themselves as hardcore followers. Produced by Ziggy Marley and Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, a film made with great affection for the man.

As we reported a couple of weeks ago, Steve Harrington has teamed up with Generic Surplus and Ace Hotel & Swim Cub Palm Springs for a whole pile of creative fun during the Coachella festival. That fun comes in the form of a pop up shop selling t-shirts, towels and some shoes designed by Harrington which is part of the hotel’s Desert Gold: Roadside Attractions event.

“Had wayyy too much fun installing the shop and meeting all the new faces,” Harrington tells us. “ODD Future, Girls, Mark Mothersbaugh, Real Estate and couple other bands rolled by. I made an instagram kaleidoscope to take trippy photographs through for viewers. Also painted a really large two-story mural.” Check out some pictures of the shop, its wares and a sweet mural after the jump.

Blur 21 Boxset: 7 Albums, 65 Unreleased Tracks, 3 DVDs and More

blur 01 Blur 21 Boxset: 7 Albums, 65 Unreleased Tracks, 3 DVDs and More

If we can put aside Alex James’ Cheese n’ The Sun foolishness and Damon’s rather earnest chin-stroking world music vibe for a minute, it’s worth remembering that Blur Blur 21 Boxset: 7 Albums, 65 Unreleased Tracks, 3 DVDs and More have released some pretty amazing albums. This boxset will probably scare a few on the price front but will be a genuinely exciting prospect for hardcore fans. 7 albums, 65 unreleased tracks, 3 DVDs, over 130 rarities, a collector’s book and a limited edition 7inch – The sheer volume of unheard material (whether worth hearing or not) should calm most cynics. Fingers crossed for a release party at The Good Mixer.

This is not their first boxset: see their 22 singles boxset Blur 21 Boxset: 7 Albums, 65 Unreleased Tracks, 3 DVDs and More.

Rough Trade Coming to New York City

rough trade nyc coming soon Rough Trade Coming to New York City

A bit of big news Stateside for music junkies who still love and purchase their fair share of physical music. London’s Rough Trade is coming to New York! I could not be more excited. The new Rough Trade NYC will open its doors this Autumn 2012 in Williamsburg. One interesting side of the story is that the new location is a partnership with The Bowery Group who will assist in funneling in live gigs to the new store-floor – not that Rough Trade needs help on that front.

A positive opening on the music front.

Ace Hotel & Swim Club – Dry Goods for Desert Gold

ace hotel desert gold 1 Ace Hotel & Swim Club Dry Goods for Desert Gold

As we have noted, Ace Hotel & Swim Club in Palm Springs has some things cooked up for the weekends of Coachella. Here take a look at the “Dry Goods” they will be selling in a poolside pop-up store as part of the Desert Gold: Roadside Attractions mini-event.

The Desert Gold Mountains Shirt bears the emblem of the aqua-toned San Jacintos mountains, while the Desert Gold Arrows Shirt was inspired by foraging for roots and cactus water in Joshua Tree National Park. The Desert Gold Canvas Bag has been “field-tested for toting small record collections, Audubon guides and pet armadillos.” All of it a good thematic fit and all of it hand-printed in Oregon. Festivities at Ace Hotel kick off this very evening, with live DJs, and continue tomorrow with a poolside set by Awesome Tapes from Africa and more.

More looks after the jump…
