“Baseball’s Golden Age: The Photographs of Charles M. Conlon” Book

"Baseball's Golden Age: The Photographs of Charles M. Conlon" Book

The golden age of a baseball was one that was controlled by the leagues… when players’ rights were low and almost unestablished. Today’s game may not be that different but a document of those times is an important one not only for the sport of baseball itself, but as a part of the American landscape.

Charles M. Conlon photographed the game from 1904 – 1942. More than 205 of those photographs have now been collected in the book, Baseball’s Golden Age: The Photographs of Charles M. Conlon Baseballs Golden Age: The Photographs of Charles M. Conlon Book, out now on the Abrams imprint. The photographs were sourced from the archives of the The Sporting News and transferred from negatives. A beautiful addition for anyone who loves the game. Available from Amazon Baseballs Golden Age: The Photographs of Charles M. Conlon Book.

Post Match Exhibition at Cube Gallery

Manchester’s Cube Gallery is hosting “Post Match,” an exhibition that mixes smoking and footie (soccer to the N.A.’s). Using cigarette packs to fold origami style jerseys, “Post Match” is an unique concept in art, sport, and smoke. Artists, Leo Fitzmaurice, developed the idea after he “noticed a wet cigarette packet on the ground in the shape of a football shirt and ten years later he is still making them and has a vast collection of over 800 hand made shirts from around the world.” Green Soccer Journal has more…

We’re Arsenal fans here, so putting up this Nike video (even with two our best players due to leave) was a prerequisite. Now we can only hope that we can look as good over a season as we do in a three minute video.

Norwich City 2011/2012 Kits by Errea

Stephen Fry’s beloved Norwich City Canaries will enter the Premier League dressed in Italian “created” kits from Errea. It’s traditional fare for the club, yellow for home and green for away, but was launched via this charming promotional video. We’re hoping Fry, who is also a club director, had a hand in the idea.

JUVENTUS AWAY 5 LO 540x405 Juventus 2011/2012 Away by Nike

Pink, Juventus’ original home color before the switch to black and white stripe, returns for the Turin club’s away matches in 2011/2012. Juventus has hit or miss success with their pink strips – the BBC calling a mid-90s version one of “the worst football kits of all time.” The contemporary style features a bold black star, and is delightfully aggressive in overall aesthetic. Made, like all new Nike football shirts, of 100% recycled polyester.

Kaizer Chiefs 2011/12 Away Kit by Nike

Selectism - Kaizer-Chiefs-Away-2011-12

Starting off on an unrelated tangent here: We absolutely despise the band namesake of Kaizer Chiefs. And now, back to the story at hand. We assume you’ve recovered from the Camo monstrosity we showed you earlier. Now here’s another kit that seems to take from a current menswear trend in contrast sleeves. And in sharp contrast (excuse the pun) to the camo kit from before, we quite like this one.

Everton FC 2011/2012 Home Kit by Le Coq Sportif

The camouflage trend officially died on July 4, 2011.

No, Mark McNairy hasn’t gone overboard with an audacious assault on traditional English footwear.*

Instead, Everton FC has chosen to dress the club’s American goalkeeper – Tim Howard – in this number for the 2011/2012 home stand. He certainly won’t blend into the teams bright blue strip, nor is he likely to match anyone in the opposing side. Everton has posted the original brief for the new home kit here. Note that there is no mention of or directive given for the goalies garb. Let this be a lesson to all sporting franchises – a #fail only equaled by Minnesotans agreeing that “Wild” is a decent name for a hockey team.

*Only joking McNairy. We love you.
