As we reported a couple of weeks ago, Steve Harrington has teamed up with Generic Surplus and Ace Hotel & Swim Cub Palm Springs for a whole pile of creative fun during the Coachella festival. That fun comes in the form of a pop up shop selling t-shirts, towels and some shoes designed by Harrington which is part of the hotel’s Desert Gold: Roadside Attractions event.

“Had wayyy too much fun installing the shop and meeting all the new faces,” Harrington tells us. “ODD Future, Girls, Mark Mothersbaugh, Real Estate and couple other bands rolled by. I made an instagram kaleidoscope to take trippy photographs through for viewers. Beams just don’t quit, regularly finding their way onto these pages and for good reason. Collaborations, off-shoots, lookbooks – there’s always something shiny and new to talk about when it comes to everyone’s favourite Japanese store. From big name projects with Ace Hotel and Converse to smaller ventures like the exceptional glasses collection with Lennon’s favourite eyewear maker Hakusan Megane. Of course, we can’t ignore their continued good works with Beams+. So, credit where credit’s due. Here we show some current season set ups, a tiny selection of what’s on offer for Spring/Summer 2012, the styling continues to impress as does the fine selection from craft and design store Fennica.

As we have noted, Ace Hotel & Swim Club in Palm Springs has some things cooked up for the weekends of Coachella. Here take a look at the “Dry Goods” they will be selling in a poolside pop-up store as part of the Desert Gold: Roadside Attractions mini-event.

The Desert Gold Mountains Shirt bears the emblem of the aqua-toned San Jacintos mountains, while the Desert Gold Arrows Shirt was inspired by foraging for roots and cactus water in Joshua Tree National Park. The Desert Gold Canvas Bag has been “field-tested for toting small record collections, Audubon guides and pet armadillos.” All of it a good thematic fit and all of it hand-printed in Oregon. Festivities at Ace Hotel kick off this very evening, with live DJs, and continue tomorrow with a poolside set by Awesome Tapes from Africa and more.

Ace Hotel reminds us that “People have adorned their wrists with leather since at least the ancient Egypt days,” but we remind ourselves that part of the reason we have not been rushing out to get leather for our wrists recently is that many of the bracelets cuffs aimed at dudes are of barbaric width. These sophisto rounders are hand-crafted in Portland by Tanner Goods and have a mellow relief pattern of geometric diamonds to keep things interesting.

We like the more reserved proportions and are hot to assume that the name on these—engraved on the interior—was inspired by our favorite Terrence Malick film. A win-win situation. Ace Hotel & Swim Club Palm Springs has enlisted L.A.-based artist and National Forest Design co-owner Steve Harrington for a novel concept, indeed. During the Coachella festival, Harrington will set up a poolside pop-up shop/trip-out room called “Roadside Attraction,” populated with festival essentials including a host of Generic Surplus Borstal shoes redesigned by Harrington.

There will also be tee shirts, tank tops, bandanas and towels as imagined by Harrington. “Just last summer I worked on a three day long art project out in Joshua Tree California. We needed a place to stay overnight to recharge and rest, so my introduction to the Ace Hotel in palm springs made for the perfect desert oasis,” Harrington says. “When Generic Surplus approached me to collaborate on the Ace Hotel project this year, it seemed like the perfect fit.”

Sounds like perfect pairings all-around will make for a welcome detour from the Porta-Potty lines.

A rare New Era on Selectism: this one comes to us direct from our good friends at the Ace Hotel. Their “Midtown” cap looks damn good in the the black and white colorways. They pay respects to their midtown location on Broadway and 29th. The classic 59FIFTY Ace Hotel New York fitted is available in limited numbers in the Ace shop.

The Boardroom at the Ace Hotel, New York City, will host fittings by East Williamsburg’s Martin Greenfield, who GQ has called “America’s Greatest Living Tailor.” Why a fitting service at the Ace Hotel? In their words: “We are inspired to offer our guests and friends to experience a fitting with this classic menswear icon in the convivial atmosphere of The Boardroom at Ace New York. It’s a tailor fitting, but it’s also an experience that embodies our passion for dressing well, and for meticulous attention to detail — just one of many traits that comprise Mr. Greenfield’s legend.” The Greenfield Fitting Service will run at the Ace Hotel New York from February 10 – 12, by appointment.

Ace Hotel plough on with more top collaborations. A letterman jacket made by those who know, Washington’s Centralia Knitting Mills. Purveyors of fine sporting goods since 1939 – don’t challenge them to a pop quiz on campus goods, they boss these matters.

Brooklyn’s Horse Cycles supplies ACE Hotel New York with a fleet of bicycles available on loan for guests as well as purchase. The steel bicycles are made for those looking to pound through New York streets – handy if you hate cabbing it or using the subway. Horse Cycle’s Thomas Callahan put the fleet together for the ACE.
