01. 3DD Deluxe 3-D Book

“After the big success of their first book, Henry Hargreaves is back and presents the 3DD: A 3-D Celebration of Breasts Selectism | Around the Web #nsfwmusic #freakish #ads #3dd – real breasts in even better 3D. ‘The compendium of un-augmented pairs comes complete with retro viewing specs to enjoy page after page of topless women. Hargreaves bumps up the quality in this edition with a new two-camera rig and better software that makes for a more life-like final product.” We can certainly see the benefits of 3D for these types of books and are sure many will agree.’ ” (highsnob)

02. The Year In NSFW Music Videos

“About this time last year, we ran an overview of some of the more interesting music videos of 2010, videos that would never have been shown on MTV, but nevertheless represented some fascinating and innovative filmmaking. At the time, we noted that “now that we get so much of our entertainment online, and MTV barely airs music videos anymore, the rules have changed.” (flavorwire)

George Lois Interview

Selectism - george-lois

It’s reached the point where posting up a George Lois interview is a reflex. Maybe it’s because we’re still not bored of what he’s got to say or because we’re so into his Esquire covers (probably both) but here’s one with Vice. It’s a long but very readable interview. Take this quote about meeting Martin Scorcese for instance:

Are these folks disappointed when they find out the majority of your work was for the big bad advertising industry?
… . It was at Cooper Union in the Great Hall, where Lincoln spoke. Saul did amazing title sequences for films like Psycho and The Man With the Golden Arm. Anyway, I gave a speech about him, and then Martin Scorsese did a half-hour lecture… Afterward somebody was like, “Georgie, you ever meet Marty?” and I said, “No, I’ve never met Marty.” So the guy takes me to the other side of the room and there are like 200 advertising guys around Scorsese. We broke through the crowd and he introduces me. Scorsese went apeshit, like, “My God! I didn’t know you existed.” He started going on about the Esquire covers and how much he liked them.”

Read the rest over at Vice.

selectism - Starstruck

Ira M. Resnick knows a bit about film. He is founder of Motion Picture Arts Gallery, a space dedicated to the art of the movies, and a trustee of the Film Society of Lincoln Center. This background makes him well suited to author Starstruck: Vintage Movie Posters from Classic Hollywood.

Releasing in mid-February from Abbeville Press, Starstruck guides readers through highlights of Resnick’s impressive personal collection. The posters date from 1912 to 1962 – representative of the “Golden Era” – and provide an overview of the film advertising industry.

Marin Scorsese provides the forward.

“What Evan Williams Did For Bourbon” | 1970s Advertising Campaign

selectism - "What Evan Williams Did For Bourbon" | 1970s Advertising Campaign

Founded in 1783 by Welsh Born Evan Williams, the Evan Williams brand is notable for being Kentucky’s first distiller. Williams moved to the area while it was still officially part of Virginia, in 1780, and became an integral member of the local political scene. He was an early member of the board of trustees of Louisville and later served as Harbor Master for the City (which is located on the Ohio River.

For us, the most important part of Williams’ life history is the discovery that converting excess corn and grain into whiskey would avoid waste. The small distillery he set up on 5th Street in Lousiville has grown exponentially, now bottles labeled Evan Williams are the 2nd most purchased Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey in the United States.

History has been a part of the Evan Williams identity for some time. Searching through the company website recently, I was tickled by the “What Evan Williams did for Bourbon” campaign of the 1970s. Linking the Welshman to other (perhaps more important) inventors, the advertisements employ a really winning method of heritage construction. Can’t help but think a similar approach would be welcome today.

all outforvictory book front All Out for Victory!

John Bush Jones’ All-Out For Victory! Magazine Advertising and the World War II Home Front examines hundreds of advertisements designed to boost American morale following Pearl Harbor. Some promote industry, others home efficiency. All combine to help create and sustain a home front that could best support the war effort. The book is richly illustrated with many of the advertisements, and as such serves a valuable role as collection of specific design for a pertinent moment in American history.

All-Out For Victory! comes from the University Press of New England.
