Our friends at Aether Apparel have teamed with Paris-based designer, Thierry Gaugain, on the excellent AETHERstream traveling cocept shop on wheels. The the 32 foot AETHERstream, currently parked at 8207 W. 3rd Street in Los Angeles, is a fully gutted, 34 foot PanAmerica Airstream. Gaugain redesigned the interior from scratch: 11 inch reclaimed oak floors, custom sofas and table by Environment Furniture, “who uses sustainable harvested wood and the reuse of otherwise discarded materials.” Well worth a stop in for a look. You’ll find the AETHERstream open 11:00am – 7:00pm daily.

Spring 2012 from Aether Apparel brings with it three new jacket styles. Above is a detail of the new “Ultralight,” a single layer microfiber jacket with pit zips and saddle seam shoulder construction. The familiar “Fall Line” takes new form in a “No Hood” version. The third new jacket is “The Breaker,” a double layer microfiber hooded shell perfect for windy spring days.
In addition to the jackets, Aether is introducing new sweats – a heavy weight zip and a classic crew neck.

Shot in San Francisco, the Spring/Summer 2011 lookbook from Aether shares the brand’s commitment to a range of outdoor pursuits. You’ll find boating, cycling, and most importantly good old fashioned kicking back at the beach. As expected, the garments meld functionality with sleek silhouettes created to work equally well on a yacht and on the block.
While Aether is based in LA, you’ll find no SoCal/NorCal rivalry here… in fact, there is sound reasoning for the decision to capture the Northern climate. With that in mind, we caught up with the Aether team to discuss their inspirations for the current season and to find out who owns the worst boards shorts in the world.

A few new styles are on the horizon from Aether. Most notable is the Polar Trench, which essentially extends Aether’s popular Cloud Jacket – insulated with Primaloft – for optimal coverage. Think tech designed to meet the needs of formal wear, the shoulders are also widened slightly to accommodate suite jackets. Primaloft features again in a new insulated version of the Fall Line. Last, but not least, Aether also has their own take on the cycling jacket… 3M throughout and pockets in all the right places.
Excuse the silly poses, we were having fun with this collection. View all three jackets after the jump.

Aether’s first travel bag is waterproof, resistant to extreme temperatures, abrasion and cracks. The bag is made of heavy duty composite material normally used on the skirts of hovercraft vehicles. In short, it is a tough piece with the same rugged function to refined environment sensibility we’ve come to expect from Aether.
The bag is complemented in the Winter 2010 line by two cashmere accessories – a woolen cap and a scarf.
All the Aether Winter 2010 accessories can be viewed after the jump.

Jeff Castelaz career in the music industry started back in the 90’s around the time the grunge movement started stretching itself across the United States – musically and in design. He was a manager, a booking agent, and even had a gig writing for graphic designer David Carson’s Ray Gun Magazine. In 2004, he co-founded Dangerbird Records helping to push acts coming through Los Angeles’s thriving Silver Lake scene. Today Dangerbird’s roster includes Silversun Pickups and the Eagles of Death Metal to name a couple.
But Castelaz’s most important and personal work began while his son, Pablo, fought a difficult battle with pediatric cancer, specifically bilateral Wilm’s Tumor. During the struggle, Castelaz updated the PaBLog, which kept friends, family, and supporters of Pablo’s fight up to date with photos, and news of his treatment. Unfortunately, on June 27th, Pablo’s individual battle with cancer ended, just days after his sixth birthday.

Barton Brooks has turned a passion for travel into a mission to make a difference through grassroots international age. He founded Global Colors, an organization that undertakes projects ranging from educational resource in Cambodia to creating vegetable gardens near African hospitals. In their efforts, Global Colors provides both financial and volunteer aid in collaboration with other organizations. The end goal is geared toward creating immediate change while teaching individuals, families, and travelers to do the same in their own environs.
Barton’s personal story began when he sold his only real asset (a hand built Shelby Cobra replica) to aid children in Agnkor Wat. The proceeds of his sale provided an education, and a launching pad for Global Colors. Since then Barton has been an advisor to the United Nations, developed projects for First Lady Laura Bush, and launched a corporate reforestation volunteer vacation program in Africa. These are just a few examples of his work and the work of Global Colors. The organization continues to create self-sustaining grass roots projects for the communities it serves.

David Taylor has done a few things worthy of envy. First, he played College Baseball at USC. Then, having become bored with the diamond, he moved to University of Arizona and on a whim joined the Wildcat football team. No small achievement, on either end, but perhaps not the everyone’s dream.
More universal, then, might be David’s current job. He spends his days listening to new music and thinking about how it might translate to commercial use. In short, he’s responsible for that moment where music clicks with moving image and finds the right balance and tone to articulate a products feeling. Or, more basically, that moment where the consumer goes “I remember that song from that commercial.”
I spoke with David to learn a little more about his background and the process behind a job that quite frankly sounds amazing.

The one who runs under the name ACL turns us onto a new line of technical wear from Los Angeles based Aether. The collection of outerwear “aims to fill the void left by the outdoor companies that put out very little cool looking performance apparel.” Aether’s wears are fashioned for use by late spring snow champions and those spending time in the wild. Look for Aether in stores shortly.
