freunde michael 01 Photographer Michael Halsbands NYC Apartment

Michael Halsband has been shooting since the 70s. Growing up in NYC meant he was never short of subject matter. “There was Central Park and the Bandshell, West Side, the Riverside Park scene and all the kids that hung out there… Once you tapped into anyone who was connected to that scene you were drawn into it very naturally”.

He went on to work at Rolling Stone Records where small projects turned into shooting Mick on the ‘81 “Tattoo You” tour and Keith Richards for Rolling Stone Magazine. Working with the likes of Warhol, Basquiat and Klaus Nomi, Michael’s career has been an eventful one. Have a peek round his Flat Iron apartment courtesy of Freunde Von Freunden.

http://www.vimeo.com/32527629

Free Man points us towards this great little interview with the legendary Glenn O’Brien. Apart from it featuring one of the nicest pair saddle shoes we’ve seen in a while, we find out more about his early years playing dress up in Ohio, his decision to drop out of Colombia to work with Warhol and where young folk are going wrong. Lots of close-ups of his impressive garms and even more impressive home, this StyleLikeU film is spot on.

warhol kids book 01 Andy Warhol Childrens Illustrations

Did you know Andy Warhol was a children’s illustrator? It wasn’t all loft parties and hanging out with Edie apparently. Brain Pickings enlightens us to the High Priest of Pop Art’s previous career. As a freelance artist in the 50’s he found himself at Doubleday illustrating kids books, his drawings a little psychedelic in nature, we’re fans of pre-Studio 54 Andy’s work.

“Andy Warhol Enterprises” at the Indianapolis Museum of Art

selectism - "Andy Warhol Enterprises" at the Indianapolis Museum of Art

After reviewing Making Money recently, the forthcoming exhibition Andy Warhol Enterprises at the Indianapolis Museum of Art is a natural post. Warhol’s been subject of three (perhaps four) separate exhibitions over the last 18 or so months, and in each distinct portion of his career is presented with firm and solid new scholarship.

Andy Warhol Enterprises examines Andy Warhol’s lifelong exploration of commerce, consumerism, and the business of art making. With artwork ranging from shop window designs and commercial illustrations of the 1950s to his groundbreaking paintings of consumer products and stars of the 1960s, and ultimately to his ventures into tv, film and magazines of the 70s and 80s, Andy Warhol Enterprises serves as a window into the world of commerce and art, and the ways that Warhol intentionally blurred the lines between the two.

The exhibition opens on October 10 and extends through January 2, 2011. An example of work featured and a preview video for Andy Warhol Enterprises after the leap.

Selectism - “Andy Warhol: Making Money” Book

Curated gets an early preview look a new Warhol book dropping on September 28th. “Rarely do we get to peek at a private gift. In essence, that is what Andy Warhol: Making Money “Andy Warhol: Making Money” Book, a forthcoming release from Skira/Rizzoli, allows. Warhol produced the original drawings for Andy Warhol: Making Money “Andy Warhol: Making Money” Book in 1981. That year the artist presented them as a gift to Berkeley Reinhold, just a young girl at the time. The daughter of John Reinhold and cousin of visionary critic and curator Henry Geldzahler, Berkeley was Warhol’s ear to youthful trend.”

selectism - "Andy Warhol: The Last Decade" at Brooklyn Museum of Art

Back in September, we mentioned the initial opening of Andy Warhol: The Last Decade at the Milwaukee Art Museum. The first major museum exploration of the artist’s final years, the most prolific decade of his 40-year career, the exhibition has shifted locations to the Brooklyn Museum of Art. On view there until September 12, 2010, it is one of the most exciting shows of the summer.

Get a sense of the spectacle, through the eyes of our photographer Jake Breinholt, after the jump.

selectism - Andy Warhol by Arthur C. Danto

Apologies for the constant Warhol coverage in recent months. Exhibitions, like that at the Milwaukee Art Museum, which have generated new thought and explored under researched areas of the artists life have come as welcomed additions to the study of Pop Art. The latest chapter, or rather book, to focus on Warhol was released yesterday. Arthur Danto, Columbia University Professor of Philosophy, is the author. Simply titled Andy Warhol Andy Warhol by Arthur C. Danto , his book is a tour of Warhol’s life with compact analysis of a multi-demensional career.

To borrow from Yale University Press’ release,

Danto suggests that “what makes him an American icon is that his subject matter is always something that the ordinary American understands: everything, or nearly everything he made art out of came straight out of the daily lives of very ordinary Americans. . . . The tastes and values of ordinary persons all at once were inseparable from advanced art.”

Well worth seeking out. Available now from Amazon Andy Warhol by Arthur C. Danto .
