OEN uncovered this fantastic photoset from João Canziani. A look at the home of  American architect Ray Kappe, an expert in sustainable design and lecturer in Southern California. The incredible surroundings are framed by huge windows and complimented by a whole lot of wood and multiple levels. This isn’t one of those polished show homes full of Barcelona chairs and obtrusive lighting. This place is lived in and clearly loved. Beautiful images showcasing this knockout house.

02. The Dumpster Project

“Like a young, curious boy trapped in a grown man’s body, collagist, animator, director and all-around creative renaissance man Mac Premo has collected a lifetime’s worth of somehow-sentimental objects in his Brooklyn Studio. Now, spurred by the move to a smaller studio, he was forced to get rid of many of these innumerable “treasures.” Rather than discard them Premo decided to build one massive collage inside a 30-yard dumpster, and thus The Dumpster Project was born.” (coolhunting)

Crane tv speaks to British architect David Chipperfield (CBE, RA, RDI, RIBA). Best known for his work on Berlin’s Neues Museum, he currently holds offices in London, Berlin, Shanghai and Milan. “Esteemed British architect David Chipperfield is renowned as one of the country’s most innovative designers. Most recently he worked with the German Embassy on the Hier and There project, and here talks to Crane.tv about his design aesthetic and the importance of one of his most famous structures – the reconstructed Neues Museum in Berlin.”

This Hiroshima house has had the unfortunate affect of making our own places feel like a pile of sad damp cereal boxes. This incredible project is the work of Kimihiko Okada. Perched literally on a series of pedestals, this curved structure is elevated above its neighbours, showing off as it rightfully should. With a feel of 50s America about it, it overlooks sea, city and mountain. We’d spend most of our time looking inwards, just walking around leering at the place itself.

The building is effectively a long winding corridor, widening and narrowing at various points, it’s lucky residents have used the space perfectly. Spoon and Tomago tell us more.

Architect Ryue Nishizawa recently completed this building in Tokyo. Built to fit in between two tall buildings, it’s invisible from the main road by ingenious use of plants and vases, making it look like an (extremely fancy) garden instead of a house. It’s the sort of thing we’d build if we had the space. Or the money. (Domus)

03. Imagining Housing For Today

“Serious architecture is another way to describe Bronx Park East. It is a single-room occupancy residence, an S.R.O., built to house tenants who had been homeless. Sunny, with modest kitchens and full bathrooms, its apartments are smaller (around 285 square feet) than otherwise legally permitted for studios in New York because different rules apply to housing for social service clients. The building has a handsomely proportioned facade, spacious public rooms and light-filled hallways, none of it standard for an S.R.O.” (newyorktimes)
