Phlegm “Funeral” in Sheffield

Selectism - phlegm 04 curatedmag Phlegm Funeral in Sheffield

We like a bit of phlegm here and so do Curated:

“Phlegm’s latest, a mural titled “Funeral”, is right in line with the artist’s recent quality. Highly detailed, distinct in narrative, and with a dash of dark undertone. Phlegm is fast becoming my favorite muralist in the street art scene.”

Selectism - 2011 shotbyjake

Curated lets us know about this:

“For the third annual visual arts commission, the Park Avenue Armory has chosen to work with artist and composer Ryoji Ikeda. The artist’s installation “the transfinite” occupies much of the buildings 55,000 square foot drill hall, offering a first chance for an American audience to experience his work. Subsuming the crowd with abstract expressions of digital code accompanied by a tight composition, Ikeda meditates on the concept of infinity.”

curated mag - London 2012 Olympic Torch

Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, both based in East London, are responsible for the design of the 2012 Olympic Torch. Taken into account the 8,000 individual torchbearers and their respective communities, the design features 8,000 circles representing all the stories that make up the charge to the Olympic Games. While the base idea is quite simple, it is achieved with great grace.

I Wish You Hadn’t Asked

Selectism - the-weather-inside-01

Creative Review lets us know about the great artwork:

“The house in I Wish You Hadn’t Asked was built in Sydney and then shipped to Denmark for the festival. It rains 200 litres of water every minute within, and the public are encourage to enter with a raincoat, although they are free to brave it without. Artist James Dive of the Glue Society says the work is “about that moment in a relationship when something is said, or done, that can’t be taken back. And the rot sets in.”

Donk at J. Lindeberg, East London

Donk 6 Willow St 540x360 Donk at J. Lindeberg, East London

Located in East London, the J. Lindeberg showroom is set to become host of a rotating series of murals by street artists. The first comes from Donk, who explores history and a sense of belonging  via his photographic, Xerox and colour wash wheatpaste. The image on the sidewall of the J.Lindeberg offices near Old Street depicts a giant Shire horse moving slowly forward whilst carrying a young boy on its back. The boy is in fact Donk’s son, who appears in many guises though out his work; here he represents the individual Londoner, as the shire horse represents London itself.

Selectism - 58-01-curatedmag

Curated turns us onto this:

“Running through June 31, 2011, FANATIC features a range of photographs and fan art by Ruvan Wijesooriya. Among the works exhibited are portraits of the famous – Iggy Pop, Mark Ronson, etc. – but most compelling are images of party people. These set the seen for fanaticism and also promote a freewheeling narrative of the night.”

Curated Q&A | Vanessa Prager

Selectism - vanessa-prager-01

Curated has a great little Q&A with artist Vanessa Prager:

“Self-taught painter Vanessa Prager reveals her latest works this Thursday (June 2, 2011 to be exact) in a special one-night-only exhibition hosted by Danny Masterson. The venue is fitting for Prager, a painter who finds inspiration in a mix of contemporary narrative and vintage photographs. In anticipation of the show, Prager and I got on the phone to discuss the idea behind Across the Universe and her process.”

Selectism - baas-01-curatedmag

Curated turns us onto this:

“Maarten Baas designed the “empty chair” at the request of Amnesty International in support of their campaign against the suppression of activists and to honor the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Liu Xiaobo. The chinese activist was unable to accept the prize in person due to imprisonment.

Baas’ chair, standing five meters, was unveiled last weekend for the 50th anniversary of Amnesty International in Amsterdam.”
