Valet interviews Scott Steinberg on his “This is Not a Polo Shirt” collection of… polo shirt. “That’s just the tongue-in-cheek name for Band of Outsiders’ new polo label. But don’t go calling it a diffusion line, just because the Crayloa-colored shirts will cost you less than Band’s main line. ‘Polos are this huge iconic, err, thing in the tiny little world of guys’ clothes,” says designer Scott Sternberg. “So, I thought they warranted their own platform.’

In the last of our process series we catch with Band of Outsiders founder, Scott Sternberg. Everything that’s needed to be said about Band has been said already, so just take a leap to read about the process in his own words.

While duffle coats had been doing the rounds amongst the super-early adopters last year (Oi Polloi have been carrying Gloverall for years now), it was only recently that Duffle coats were fully brought back into fashion mainstream. And one of the main instigators was this Band Of Outsiders duffle. The black colourway makes it a little less versatile than the usual navy duffle, but the detachable hood – big enough to fit any size noggin – and cropped length more than make up for that. Tim Blanks at men.style chimes in on the runway looks from Band of Outsiders for Spring 2010. “This time around, he opted for something simpler, a literal interpretation of summer sun, beach, pool—the kind of California fantasy that might be nursed by a guy growing up in Ohio. But, this being Band of Outsiders, it wasn’tquite so simple. Sternberg had been watching Jacques Cousteau docs, and he was keen on blending their rugged nautical types with his own aesthetic.”
