Barena Cavana Coat

03 April 2012, 20.30 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

barena cavana coat 1 Barena Cavana Coat
We have given the toggle coats from Barena some love before, and with good reason. They are distinctive, functional and handsome. The danger of slipping into constume-y territory is avoided by the modern cut and choice fabrics, and this navy Cavana coat is no exception. Lightweight linen for summer, rope and toggle fastening, a knitted shawl collar and big artist pockets: yes, yes, yes and yes please. Made in Italy; Très Bien Shop has it.

Another Look | Barena – Novel and Nautical

barena 01 Another Look | Barena Novel and Nautical
We keep hearing that Barena is catching on in Europe. Based on these product shots, we can see why. We thought we were pretty well bored with seafaring stripes and the like, but there is something so simultaneously authentic and unexpected about them here (it probably has something to do with the creative use of toggles). This is not all that surprising as the label is HQed in Venice, where water is streets.

We have reported on their toggle coat before and are once again reminded that the shape and look of the thing win so heavily because it doesn’t come across as nautical kitsch. In fact, it looks more like something a feudal-era Japanese peasant who was really a samurai would wear while tramping the countryside in search of blood and sake. Good work, Barena. Available at The Next Door.

Selectism - Barena-spring-2012-09

Barena have been on our radar for a while, but we haven’t delved into the brand properly until today. As you’d expect for spring range showing at Pitti, it’s a lightweight linen affair but there’s enough subtle touches and patterns to move it away from blue suited uniformity. We also caught up with one of the owners, Francesca Zara for a quick Q&A about the brand, her favourite piece from her collection her love for the countryside.

Read it and look at more of the collection after the leap.
