Not more than a half decade past, the swinging pendulum of the Head Porter camera pouch on a carabiner was the symbol of Japanese “street fashion” moving into the west. Argue it as you may, but the very few (initiall) who could get their hands on the pouch coveted them. The price was nominal compared to the Porter full-sized bag offerings. Like the GUCCI belt, it was one of those well priced items affordable by all.
Today, things are a bit different. The expansion of Porter pouch love moves into new territory. Take the Baxter of California’s “Grooming Implements” kit, which features a custom Porter pouch shell and three grooming tools: a nail file, tweezers, and nail clipper – all marked with the “Baxter of California” name. $140 makes this an excellent gift option for the person in your life who needs some upkeep help.

With 50 years experience producing grooming products (shampoo, skincare, etc.), Baxter of California has made the move to “grooming implements.” As with the products, Baxter is keeping this line simple, beginning with a beautiful handmade tortoise comb. Environmentalists will be pleased to learn that the combs are not real tortoise, but instead are produced from high quality cellulose acetate sheets (a natural, modified polymer derived from cotton and tree pulp cellulose). From cutting to polishing, each comb goes through a detailed 12-step process of manufacturing (all done by hand), resulting in smoothly tapered teeth and rounded tips for comfort and care of the hair and scalp.
Unquestionably handsome haircare, the combs come in three sizes.

Highsnob loves the smell of candles. They profile the Baxter of California for Colette “We Love California” candle. “The new scented-soy-wax-candle aptly named “Cruel Summer” was inspired by the scent and ambience of California. Cruel Summer opens with a very powerful green, leafy top note accented with a citrus lemon undertone. The body of this complex blend is a floral, green bouquet starring brilliant hyacinth, tempered with notes of cyclamen, and accented with a fresh marine accord. These rest on an alluring white musk base, embellished with cedar wood.”

Just thinking about some stocking stuffers with this one. A good one. “Baxter of California … teams up with Saturdays NYC to produce a limited distribution “Beach Soap”… the new soap is loosely inspired by Baxter’s popular Italian Lime scented glycerin bar, but was “re-mixed” by the guys at Saturdays to capture the essence of the Atlantic Ocean.” Available through the Staurday’s NYC shop.

Baxter continues to celebrate their 45th with a new razor featuring Hart steel blade and a Makr sleeev. “The Hart Steel blade is predominately a hand made product, and all of the processes are completed in Northern Michigan by skilled artisans…Genuine Shell Cordovan is the art of tanning at its finest. More than just a color, it’s a very specific leather, from a particular part of a horsehide. The irregular oval shaped shells are tanned, stuffed, shaved, and then polished. This is a legit item so play nice.

Two of our favorite brands come together for a celebration. “Baxter of California, the premium menʼs grooming line since 1965, will be celebrating itʼs 45th anniversary. As part of our celebration, we commissioned American Blade manufacture Hart Steel to produce a limited edition cut throat razor. The blade dons a 14k gold inlay “45” on the spine of the blackened steel blade, signifying the 45 years of history. In addition, we collaborated with leather company Makr Carry Goods to produce a custom leather (Horween Chromexcel Horse Work Butts) sleeve for the blade.”

Our friends at ACL cover the opening of the newest barber shop to hit LA from another group of friends. “When I was in L.A. a few weeks ago I stopped by to see the gents from Baxter of California at their then unfinished barber shop on LaCienega. Well today the veil has been lifted, and the new spot dubbed Baxter Finley, Barber & Shop, looks even better than I had anticipated. It is opening officially tomorrow, if you want to stop in for L.A.’s newest (and possibly best?) wet shave.”
