When it comes to lightweight summer blazers, we usually stick to the likes of Garbstore and Engineered Garments. But Paul Smith’s ‘Jeans’ collection are steadily releasing several solid jacket options that’d fit into any workwear inspired wardrobe. This jacket does have the dreaded three buttons that everyone advises against, but we say just rock it with confidence and you’ll get away with it. Rules, rules, rules. Menswear is all about the rules. While we do accept that certain rules were instilled for good reason, it’s the endless devotion to said rules that leaves so many people scared to attempt anything bordering on daring. Take this Paul Smith jacket for instance. The rules (that word again) say that we shouldn’t have anymore than two buttons on a suit jacket if you don’t want to look like a granddad. Robert Geller’s profile has been steadily rising for a good while now and it seems to have spilled over from Thom Browne-like adoration for his designs to people actually wanting to purchase his pieces. Unique detailing such as the flecked wool and smoking-style lapels (hence the name of the jacket) make this a great piece. The price is far from recession friendly, but if you’ve got it, get this. We had an interesting comment the other day from someone in the Phillipines who complained that most of what we featured wasn’t available in his neck of the woods – an intriguing thought given the amount of emails we get about why we feature labels that are only available in the Eastern hemisphere.

If you’re still in the market for a good, lightweight crumpled blazer (and there isn’t as much choice as we thought they’d be) then this should your go-to choice. Despite the popularity of blazers, most ones on the market right now either have poor cut or a bad choice of fabrics. Given that most guys tend to avoid tailors (although they can perform wonders with your wardrobe) the perfect fit and fabric is needed off the rack which, to be fair, isn’t too much to ask for. The problem with clothing sites as they get too big is that they can get confusing to navigate. Just ask Yoox. ASOS have recently added a designer section to their site to differentiate labels like Acne from stuff like Franklin & Marshall. The problem now they can’t seem to decide what labels count as designer and what doesn’t, hence why this Opening Ceremony blazer isn’t in the designer section whilst labels like Pringle are.

That aside, this knitted blazer is a great piece and it’s one that isn’t even available on the Opening Ceremony site. Get this from ASOS.

Tom Ford had a big hand in making double breasted blazers look attractive thanks to his modern twist on it. Now plenty of designers are featuring the DB jacket in their collections – this Kolor jacket is a good example of a classic updated correctly. The navy jacket with gold buttons is a pretty standard old school piece but when the fit is updated accordingly, it can look modern. Get it from Browns.
