It’s here! After a long wait (they did a guest blog for us way back in May) the fourth issue of The Rig Out is finally here. With former Stone Roses guitarist John Squire creating the artwork for the front and back covers, photography from Neil Bedford and Anthony Crook and writing from Gary Warnett, Mark Smith and some other fella.

Here’s one for the Sonic Youth fans out there (which should be all of you, if you’ve got working ears). We’re not usually that into over expensive books – we can only afford to buy over expensive clothing – but this book sounds pretty amazing. It’s 784 pages long and has two 7 inch records filled with unreleased songs. Available at Opening Ceremony and Amazon.

Eye magazine turn us onto this new book from the publishers of Slanted magazine. Focusing on the relationship between fonts and music, the book asks several young designers to create ‘typographic interpretations of song lyrics’. As pretentious as that sounds, it makes for interesting viewing. The book is split by genre, using specific fonts for specific types of music. Songs vary from the likes of Faithless to David Bowie’s ‘Man who sold the world’ (pictured above) and, as you’d expect from this sort of project, not everything works. But enough of it does, so it’s definitely worth a closer look – which you can do after the leap.

It should come to no one’s surprise that I am into the very best in weirdo sounds from rock, to noise, and drone beyond listenability, so it’s refreshing to find a magazine with a hybrid format. “The Journal of Popular Noise is a semi-annual audio magazine inspired by the traditions of pop music, printed periodicals, and the delight of a finely crafted artifact. Limited edition of hand-folded, letter-press printed copies… Every issue conforms to the same prescribed editorial structures but is composed by a different artist or group. This set contains issues 13-15 featuring (respectively) Andrew W.K., Ian Svenonius, and Walker & Cantrell.”

Watch lovers in the market for a classic vintage look may do well by picking up the 2008/2009 Classic Wristwatches Price Guide from Abbeville Press. It’s a good reference guide to determining if that eBay sale is doing your right. The Classic Wristwatches guide tolls in at 239 pages and covers the gamut of watchmakers and you may be surprised as to what vintages wristwatches are out there. We found some new favorites by scanning the book.
