Circus Magazine

03 November 2010, 16.45 | Posted in Books & Magazines | 1 comment »

Selectism - circus-magazine-01.jpg

We’d seen Circus magazine around town but never picked it up because (a) we were slightly put off by the £12 cover price and (b) we’d never seen it in a place where we were allowed to browse through it without being looked at like a thief. Thankfully Magculture has taken a look at it and, bookazine rant aside, liked it.

The magazine itself is a German based publication which makes use of bloggers work worldwide, distilling all this work into an attractive magazine. The first issue focuses on the world of fashion, teaming up with several bloggers from that world (albeit the more personal style based blogs than the menswear ones).

Selectism - grolierclub-wiley-01-curatedmag

Curated turns us onto this new exhibition, which if nothing else will have some very handsome looking books.

“On view at New York’s Grolier Club through November 20, 2010, John Wiley & Sons: 200 Years of Publishing covers one families dedication to the the transmission of knowledge through writing. Rare and first editions are exhibited, tracing the development of the publishing industry and the growth of the United States. Included is Herman Melville’s Typee and Edgar Allen Poe’s Tales.

Those two titles alone are enough to peak my interest. Should you be interested too, but live away from New York, click here for the online exhibition.”

File Magazine Issue 4

Selectism - file-magazine-01

We’ve raved about File magazine before and now the fourth issue’s out, so we’re going to rave some more (about the magazine, we’re not going to a party). File’s USP is that, in their own words, it’s a magazine to “watch and read”. We haven’t got our mitts on an issue yet, but what we have seen – which is shown after the jump – looks intriguing. There’s also several short stories and a documentary on the watchable half of the magazine that’ll be sure to keep your attention for a while yet. (File Magazine)

We featured this magazine not too long ago, but now there’s a flickthrough to watch so you can see the whole thing.

EXP. Magazine

Selectism - exp-magazine-01

We don’t usually feature much video game related items, but this magazine was too interesting to pass up. Created as a thesis project by Cory Schmitz, EXP. magazine is a one-off magazine aiming to bring some class to video games magazines. Far more Apartamento than Official PS3 magazine in appearance, we were attracted to the magazine because, well, it’s just very good looking. EXP. is a near one man job, with Schmitz creating unique art works for the magazine, as well as creating the layout, art direction and branding. While EXP. isn’t going to be put into production he’s created a similar magazine (entitled ‘The Controller’) which he hopes to release soon. (Cargo Collective)

Put A Egg On It

Selectism - IMG_5094

Magculture turns us onto Brooklyn based food magazine, Put A Egg On It. According to Magculture, it focuses on the social enjoyment of food as opposed to endless recipes you’ll never make. Between this, Fire & Knives and Apartamento, it looks like there’s a new set of magazines that loves food, but in an entirely different way to the food mags of old.

Monocle Mediterraneo

Selectism - monocle-mediterraneo-01.jpg

Magculture turn us onto Monocle Mediterraneo. News of Monocle’s newspaper has been doing the rounds for a while now and it’s finally completed. Their main reasoning for this was to provide a textual stopgap (wanky terms, but true) between their bumper summer issue and their next issue. In a short chat with Magculture, Tyler Brule stated how he felt the newspaper was the right method for a monocle summer one-off issue.

‘We wanted to do a little more this year and fill the text/image gap. We considered adding an eleventh issue (they take a winter break with a combined Dec/Jan issue too) but also considered how our readers live over the summer’

‘Build On’ Book

Selectism - build-on-book-front

Curated turns us onto this new book, entitled Build-on Build On Book.

It’s Nice That has rebuilt its tightly edited webshop, an event that lends credence to pointing to one of the e-store’s offerings – Build-On.

Build-on Build On Bookcelebrates the reclamation of space and the transformation of old buildings for new uses. Old churches become offices and residences. Bunkers and other bits of industrial waste too find new function. It is green architecture of a different kind, a recycling of the disused

Check out the spreads over at Curated.

The Green Soccer Journal

Selectism - the-green-magazine-01.jpg

Magculture turns us onto The Green Soccer Journal, a magazine we first found out via twitter. Aside from the usual things setting it apart from most football magazines (good design for one), they’ve also got an enviable contributor list. Including folks like Guardian Sports writer Richard Williams, illustrator Peter Till and photographer Neil Bedford, it’s clear they roll deep.

Gym Class Magazine Issue 06

Selectism - gym-class-magazine-06-01

The latest issue of Gym Class Magazine is out and it’s one for magazine lovers. Entitled the ‘Magazine Fanboy Issue’, there’s interviews with Penny Martin, editor of The Gentlewoman, the co-founder of 032c and the art directors of Spanish Esquire and The Ride Journal. As you can probably guess from the above picture, there’s two alternate covers, the butt-inspired cover being the limited edition version. It’s available from Gym Class Magazine’s site.

If you’re still undecided what’s wrong with you? you can take a look at a flick through after the leap.
