Joey Roth Ceramic Speakers in Black

Designer Joey Roth’s returns back to highly successful ceramic design speakers with a reboot in black. Using their new design diaphragm for improved sound, the Roth speakers look as strong in black as they do the original white. They retain the wood platform base and as they say: wood makes everything sound better. They debut this Thursday on the Joey Roth site. Be sure to check out Roth’s other design work.

Curated turns us onto this bit of news:

“Humans and animals are the central themes of ceramicist Kate MacDowell’s sculpture. Sometimes the two intertwine. Sometimes the sculptures form larger narratives – for instance she’s produced an amazing series that relates to bird hunting. And, at other times, the sculpture simply causes a bit of mental unrest.”

Curated turns us onto this Studio Glithero piece:

“The result of a process which captures direct impressions of botanical specimens, London’s Studio Glitero have created a trio of objects. On the process they note, “Using age-old preserving techniques, humble weeds of inner London borough pavements are pressed, dried and then composed between plates of glass that function like photographic negatives. Working with light sensitive chemicals, the plates and tiles are then exposed under ultra violet light, which develops a photogram of the specimens in intense Prussian blue. What remains is a crisp white silhouette of the specimens, creating intricate floral designs of the subjects from root to tip. ” With this complete, the group produces vases, lamp shades, and glorious tiles.”

selectism - Blaue Blume Tea Set by Undergrowth Design

Pop-up shops are, as you know, all the rage. In London, the Temporium will open on December 9, 2010 and feature a host of design led brands. Included in the action is Undergrowth Design. For the event they’ve produced this leggy tea set. Called “Blaue Blume”, the set includes includes a teapot, milk jug and tea cup all with legs for a handle, a cake stand, plates and a sugar bowl in the shape of a bathtub. Decorative flourish is inspired by antique lace.

The Temporium runs from 9-19 December at 221 Brompton Road, London SW3 2EJ.

Expresso Espresso Cups

selectism - Expresso Espresso Cups

As we’ve featured a few espresso machines in the past, it seems worthwhile to mention a nice set of cups to accompany which ever one you’ve chosen (or lust after).

Design Milk notes the Expresso Espresso Cup, which caught my attention because while they are produced from a 3-D computer drawing, the shape derives from traditional handmade Dutch ceramics. The firm behind the Expresso Espresso Cups is BuroJet, a studio located in Eindhoven.

A few more snaps of the Expresso Espresso Cups.

Kristen Coelho Ceramics

curated mag - Kristen Coehlo Ceramics

Kristen Coelho works in porcelain producing simple forms with subtle abstract glazing. Having trained in Adelaide, Australia, Coelho moved to London in the early 1990s. There she became fascinated by the history and tradition of British Art Pottery. This interest spilled into an exploration of late 19th-century enamel wares, which spurred her own experimentation with surfaces. Since returning to Australia in 1998, Coelho has become a lecturer in Ceramics at the University of South Australia.

She is represented by Matin, a gallery specializing in contemporary art and craft. (via Curated).

More examples of Coelho’s brilliantly simple production after the jump.

selectism - New Ceramics Galleries at the Victoria & Albert Museum

“Unrivaled” anywhere else in the world, the Victoria & Albert Museum’s ceramics collection has received new housing. The exhibition space opens tomorrow, September 18, and is comprised of several galleries. An introductory exhibition highlights the “world history” of ceramics, while other rooms tackle technique and architectural ceramics. On view is also a comprehensive study collection of 20th-century ceramic.

More images (via the Guardian) of the new galleries after the jump.
