Herman Miller – Kyle Fleet – Private Rocker

Miller Fleet Rocker 02 540x344 Herman Miller Kyle Fleet Private Rocker

I’d like to see someone try and work this into their desk set up. The Private Rocker designed by Kyle Fleet, a student at Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan, is the ultimate ’stay away from me fellow workers’ piece of furniture shielding you from the open plan nonsense that surrounds you. Part of the ‘Rest and Concentration in the Workplace’ project, this piece came from research which suggested workers are more productive if given access to some form of private space. What goes on behind the private rocker is your business but let’s be honest, this has post lunch nap written all over it.

Bellboy Chair 01 Bellboy: Reclaimed Timber Water Tower Chair

Bellboy – a collaborative workshop based in Brooklyn, have produced this beautiful chair using reclaimed timbers from the New York City Water Tower. Waste not want not, this Old Growth California Redwood has been put to good use by the hand of Mat Driscoll. Described as a “A low lying lounge chair”, this deep seat might take a bit of a push to get out of but we’re all in favour of chairs that encourage you to stay put. A great piece of design, more here. (NC)

gstar raw vitra prouve raw 1 G Star RAW for Vitra, Prouvé RAW Tables and Chairs
Billed as a “respectful reinterpretation of furniture pieces originally designed by French modernist Jean Prouvé,” this continued collab between denim giants G-Star RAW and furniture manufacturer Vitra bears more Prouvé RAW fruit. Fruit that you can sit in and eat off of. As before, the collection will be on display in Vitra’s shop in New York’s meatpacking district. The Simpsons Chair Set – 56th Studio

simpons chairs 01 The Simpsons Chair Set 56th Studio

It’s Nice That point us towards this incredible Simpsons chair set, a rare example of novelty furniture that makes us smile rather than grimace. Newcomers on the design scene 56th Studio, a Bangkok based multidisciplinary collective, deal in “quirky design and cutting-edge graphical matters”. This Simpsons family chair set is part of their ‘Caricature’ series, creating minimal interpretations of well known pop culture figures, translating their distinctive features into furniture design.

“We believe that objects possess power of communication; therefore, we decide to take a tongue-in-cheek look at investigating Pop and Hollywood Culture in tangible forms, in hoping that it would make the line that separates Graphic from Furniture become thinner. The result is, just like caricature drawing, a collection of chairs that is graphically sarcastic, animated in its details, and meticulously unique in the craft of upholstery.”

Marni Chair 04 Marni Chair Collection Made by Former Prisoners

Yep, Marni’s 100 piece chair collection for the Salone del Mobile in Milan, constructed by former inmates of Colombian prisons. This isn’t  your usual fancy designer seating situation, metal chairs covered in plastic and more at home on the porch, Marni employs its usual colour range for this smart but far from luxury collection. Ex-prisoners enrolled in rehabilitation programs, their efforts will be sold at the Marni store in Milan. (FN)

Watch | ‘Chairs’ by Sarah Illenberger

YouTube Preview Image

A nice bit of stop motion action. Designer Sarah Illenberger hails from Munich and studied her craft at Chelsea College of Art and Central St Martin’s in London. Her medium is just about anything she can get her hands on; embroidery, food, light…the running theme however is a sense of humour and a refusal to take design seriously. With clients such as Audi, Hermes and COS (for whom Sarah created a Selectism window), a light-hearted touch has obviously paid off. In this short video series we see classic midcentury chairs from Eames, Herman Miller, Eero Saarinen throw some moves. More at Ignant.

Michael Kluver – Sitting in Style

09 February 2012, 01.00 | Posted in Design | No comments »

just chairs 1 Michael Kluver Sitting in Style

Michael Kluver’s design studio hews to what he calls “journalistic design,” which involves using “words, imagery and three-dimensional work” to comment on the world. Here, he reports on the way we sit with the re-imagining of four iconic chairs by Eames, Rietveld, Brewer and Mackintosh. The collection is called “Just Chairs,” and the cheekiness doesn’t stop there, for you see, each design has been wrestled back into the parameters of the most basic chair form imaginable. Each one is the same height, width, depth and angle—a design trick Kluver hopes will demystify the past and ask “important questions with regards to the future.”

So will we go back to sitting in rigid upright seats? Impossible to say. One thing is for certain, however, we won’t be sitting in any of these. The only things for sale here are 100 sets of prints of illustrations of the chairs; perfect for framing and admiring from a comfortable spot on your couch. (nalden)
