Selectism returned to London Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2012, camera in hand, to capture goings on beyond the catwalk.

Men’s Day isn’t Men’s day without a visit to the Installations. For the past few seasons NEWGEN MEN & Fashion East have brought together a selection of designers to display their wares in a Somerset House exhibition space. Allowing new and more established brands to showcase their work in a more informal setting and visitors to get close-up with displays, the event has become an important part of the British Fashion Council’s efforts to raise the profile of homegrown designers.

This year’s list included; Bunney, Christopher Raeburn, Sibling, Christopher O’Brien, Christopher Shannon, Dr. Noki’s – NHS, Kit Neale, Lee Roach, LF Markey, Marwood, Oscar Quiroz, Paw Hansen, Sebastian Tarek, T. Lipop, Tom Ryling and William Richard Green.

The Selectism crew found themselves backstage at some U.K favourites. Much action to report on from yesterday’s showings so excuse us while we go a little London Fashion Week on you today. Menswear has gradually crept up the order of importance at LFW and is about to take a big leap with LONDON COLLECTIONS: MEN, a 3 day showcase debuting in June.

Back to Autumn/Winter 2012, first up: Christopher Shannon. The king of modern sportswear, expect big logos, monochrome, multiple keychains, plaid, laser cut detailing and shoes from Kickers. A man with a clear cut aesthetic, one of the few designers whose season statement is clearly identifiable on the catwalk.

“Three key references serve as a standing point for Christopher Shannon’s AW/12 collection: Mathieu Kassovitz’s 1995 film La Haine; the 1998 photographic exhibition catalogue W’Happen by Jason Evans; and the idea of looking at European dress codes, specifically the subtle differences between the way young urbanites outside the UK dress”

Christopher Shannon introduces a side project to his mainline. Kidda concentrates on two of Shannon’s strengths, bold graphic prints and easy to wear jersey. Heavy chain, pixelated snowflakes and a squiggle print with a touch of the Keith Harings about it, fans of CS will not be disappointed. Face painting optional.

Interesting peek behind the scenes at Christopher Shannon Autumn Winter 2011. Plenty of quilting, jersey, fancy sportswear and embellished eyebrows. Whilst the video may not focus heavily on the clothing itself, what it does reflect is the attitude and stance of the label.

We caught up with Chris Shannon after his sportswear influenced, comb-filled show on Wednesday and spoke briefly with him about the brand, where it’s going and, of course, the new collection. Take a leap to read it.

Leslie Winers “Witch” album served as inspiration for the Spring/Summer 2012 Christopher Shannon collection. ”Check madras fabrics and classic college sweatshirts have been re-interpreted with collage prints for an Americana look. Shannon has continued the infusion of his signature clean menswear staples, fabricated in luxury nylons & adorned with textures that nods to the portrait work of photographers such as Viviane Sassen, Malick Sidibe and Zanele Muholi.”  One of the better collection on the casual end of the trend. Well done.

An interesting collaboration between brit desinger Christopher Shannon, King of the ‘X’ , and Pointer shoes. Shannon is a big sportwears fan so this one was a bit of a no brainer. White Laurel Print over black canvas hi-tops. Find them at Oki-ni.

First off, this shirt isn’t new (so save the snarky comments for another day, m’kay?) But it is handsome and, more importantly, it is on sale. This got ignored when we first put it up, but that was during the times when people wrote earnestly about oxford shirts. It’s a new world these days, full of banana prints and everything – which means a shirt like this looks downright subtle, timeless even. (C-Store)

EASTPAK is set to release a new 10 bag collection with Central Saint Martins School’s, Nicomede Talavera: their first with an undergraduate since working with “Christopher Shannon and follows in the footsteps of designers Gaspard Yurkevich, Rick Owens and Raf Simons who have also collaborated with the iconic bag and accessories label… The shapes of the bags are created using darts, they have scrunched leather detailing on the straps and handles and each bag also comes with a pony skin wallet attached in colours white, grey or black.”
