‘Clarks in Jamaica’ Book – The Champions Shoe – Preview

Clarks Jamaica Book 01 Clarks in Jamaica Book The Champions Shoe Preview

Many of us have been stepping out in Clarks since schooldays. Nowadays it’s Originals, back then it was the excitement of getting your feet measured in that whirling, clunking measuring machine. As those sides moved in, wondering whether that Skynet contraption would crush your tiny feet was one of the most exciting parts of the back to school ritual. The brand will always have a place our hearts. Interestingly, a similar affection for the Somerset brand has been bubbling under in Jamaica for decades now with the British import seeing a sudden surge in popularity with Vybe Kartel’s hit ‘Clarks’ – “Everybody haffi ask weh mi get mi Clarks/ Di leather hard, di suede soft, toothbrush get out di dust fast”.

Tapping into this renewed interest, Al Fingers is set to release this image heavy account of the shoes standing on the Island. “Through current and historic photographs, interviews, and previously unseen archival material, and with particular focus on the Jamaican musicians who have worn and sung about Clarks Originals shoes for years, this book explores how footwear made by a Quaker firm in the small, quiet, English village of Street, Somerset, came to be the “baddest” shoes in Jamaica.”

Text by Al Fingers, images by Mark Read – You’ll have to wait until October to get your hands on this but click on through our gallery for sneak preview of what’s to come.

Buyer’s Guide | Casual Shoes for Fancy Pants

casual dress shoes lead Buyers Guide | Casual Shoes for Fancy Pants
We teeter with our attitude toward dressing up. Too few men bring dedication and creativity to how they pull it together, but putting on a three-piece suit and leather-soled shoes every morning is extraneous. Where shoes are concerned in the quest for a well-curated shield, there are fine lines to walk. It all depends on the spikiness of the hair or his overall Kanye-ness, for instance, but sometimes a dude in a suit wearing high-tops looks like a real dick.

Find the right casual shoe for gussying with, however, and you are a comfortable killer.

A selection of shoes we might pair with fancy pants and blazers after the jump.

YouTube Preview Image

Our bros over at Highsnob posted this pretty amazing Jake Gyllenhaal rampage video recently. Tearing down some unsuspecting East Londoners, if you’ve ever danced in the basement of Dalston Superstore this one is for you.

Mr Gyllenhaal was styled by Glenn Kitson, using some rather fine brands including Levis Vintage, New Balance, Clarks and Ebbets Field Flannels. Watch out for an excellent Eastman for Oi Polloi leather A1 jacket and a Snoopy/Champion tee fit for any Hollywood mass murderer. Directed by Daniel Wolfe with Somesuch & Co – Sleep easy our East End pals.

Oi Polloi Clarks Wallabees – Unicorn Leather in Dijon and Wasabi

clarks wallabee oipolloi specials 6 Oi Polloi Clarks Wallabees Unicorn Leather in Dijon and Wasabi

That’s right… unicorn leather. The new Oi Polloi Clarks Wallabees use what is known as “unicorn leather” – “the name given to elk hides by the specialist tannery tasked with producing the raw materials.” Elk and deer hides are super supple and these Clarks will be no exception. Choose from two colorways – dijon and wasabi – both of which may be some of best we have seen in 2012 so far. The green hue (wasabi) elk leather on the Wallabee is impressive.

Available in limited numbers from Oi Polloi. #need

Updated with new looks!

Velour delivers us a preview of their Autumn Winter 2012 boot with the Clarks Originals collection. The boot goes well beyond the usual colorway plays. Patchwork and woven leathers are contrasted with oily nubucks and deep browns and greens – all of which pull from Velour’s Scandinavian roots. Delivers in stores around August 2012. (apologies on the tough photo).

Clarks Originals for Beams Desert Boot

Selectism - clarks-beams-originals-01

While it’s been a tough week for Clarks lover Vybz Kartel – he’ll be exchanging Clarks for cigarettes if convicted – but he should look on the bright side, his favourite shoe company has done a great collab! We’re sure that’s all the good news he needs right now. Clarks and Beams have created an exact replica of the original desert boot, making it in an orange so sharp it’ll slice a coconut. (End)

Clarks for CONCEPTS Ashcott Shoe Collection

Another Clarks special for Cambridge MA’s Concepts store. The Ashcott gets works in some laid back colorways. Solids seems to be of the order. The lo-top is a flat finish that has some breathability for the summer months. We would love to see someone take this model to new heights with a pattern.
