Selectism - Men's Jeans Need Pleats

London’s  Telegraph published an intereesting editorial on the state of mens jeans calling out for a move away from the “drainpipe” look and for designers ot start considering the over-30 crowd. “Added to the woes of the average jean-seeker, brands such as Cheap Monday and American Apparel have pushed drainpipes, a cut that gives a spray-on look that requires an underfed frame, so it’s not one that many over the age of 30 need attempt.” Writer Charlie Porter (who is also Associate editor at GQ UK) sings the praises of Acne’s “The Gentleman’s Jean.”

Selectism - Levis Heritage

DNR is reporting this week that Levi Strauss, the company synonymous with workwear denim and jeans is looking to leverage their brand to offer “complete lifestyle collections.” Leveraging the power of their classic American heritage, Levi plans to “garner a much larger percentage of sales from tops, accessories, footwear, outerwear and other categories. The strategy is aimed at jump-starting the company’s $4.27 billion in sales—which have been basically flat since 2003—and diversifying the company beyond its iconic bottoms businesses, which currently account for about 87 percent of total sales.” (photo via nyt)

Dior Radioactive Denim Jean

Selectism - Dior Radioactive Denim Jean

Luxist turns us onto some serious use of metallic pigments. “If you’ve ever felt the need to spend $600 on a pair of jeans you are in luck. Dior designed these ‘radioactive’ men’s jeans that are made of 100% cotton, in a dark wash, with a shiny metallic finish. The five pocket cut and button fly appear pretty standard, as does the slightly tapered leg, so my guess is you are paying for the unique silver ‘radioactive’ look, unless they also repel spills…. “

I’m sure if they repel but they may cause some to step away in fear of contact.  Available online and in Dior boutiques for 600$US.

Selectism - Real Real Genuine Spring 2008

Denimology reminded me on viewing that I have yet to mention my good friend Nick’s very favorite denim company. Real Real Genuine is a United Kingdom special. You see, they make a jean for a man looking for a premium regular and loose fit. Sure, they carry a skinny jean as well, but their straight and loose leg silhouettes that come in your choice of aged or raw are tops. And the added bonus of a tote to take away is fitting.
