selectism - Soot Desk

Here’s a stunning architect desk designed by Note Design Studio of Stockholm. The desk is covered inside and out with pine veneer in a herringbone pattern. The piece was designed for cabinetmaker Karolina Stenfelt, who showed her skills while studying at Carl Malmsten School of Furniture – using the desk as a glowing example of her capabilities. (via Dezeen).

We wouldn’t mind working behind something like this little beauty. More looks follow.

Made ‘Stroller’ Desk

Selectism - stroller-desk-01

Made is a relatively new site, but it’s already getting a bit of a rep amongst those who want to step up from Ikea but can’t quite afford the creations we see in Monocle (i.e. most people on earth). They’ve got things like this ‘Stroller’ desk which we could definitely see in a home office. We’re not quite sure why they need a naked woman advertising this (you adolescents will be glad to know that it’s after the leap) but they’ve done just that. (Made)

Take a leap to see more shots. Of the furniture.

Desk and Chair by Josh Finke

finke furniture 01 curatedmag Desk and Chair by Josh Finke

Furniture from Curated

Influenced by stalwarts of California design Green & Green and Sam Maloof, furniture maker Josh Finke has produced a solid set of table and chair. The inspiration comes primarily in the craft (exposed joinery, etc.) and there is a discernible Green & Green aesthetic. I’m most tickled by the movement of the stretchers… which I think are lovely.

Thonet for Muji

We’ve mentioned the collaborative project between Thonet and Muji before, but now that it is officially rolling it is worth revisiting both concept and product. Working with Muji, Thonet (an iconic German Furniture company) aims to bring affordable versions of classic designs to the market. Design within reach? Sorry.

Among the initial offerings are new versions of the famed bentwood chair and table, re-imagined by James Irvine, and a tubular steel desk designed by Konstantine Grcic. The chair, table, and desk all update the original forms without losing the integrity of the base idea. (via Retro to Go)

Fendi Trunk Desk with Roll-out Chair

nigo fendi trunk front Fendi Trunk Desk with Roll out Chair

This is a banger. We could have only pulled this from Nigo, the headmaster of Japan’s The Bathing Ape clothing line. He recently blogged about visiting the Fendi factory and discovering this very baller Fendi trunk that doubles as a desk. What is most fascinating is the rollout safebox in the middle of the trunk that doubles as a chair. That’s serious.

Campaign Style Captains Desk

31 December 2008, 19.49 | Posted in Furniture | 1 comment »

orvis captaindesk front Campaign Style Captains Desk

Orvis typically only grabs attention for fly rods and really spectacular embroidered cords. A bit surprising is this Captain’s desk they’ve got on offer. Quite nice, and the description really hits the mark. Channeling their inner J. Peterman –

Were you to board an 18th-century frigate of the East India Company, you would have seen a Captain’s campaign desk similar to this one. Because quarters were snug, the desk needed to provide maximum functionality in a small amount of space. This handsome antique-style replica is detailed with a leather writing surface on the polished desktop, brass corners to protect from damage, deep drawers that might have housed log books, charts, and the requisite flintlock pistols.

Meyer May Writing Desk designed by Frank Lloyd Wright

flw desk front Meyer May Writing Desk designed by Frank Lloyd Wright

Furniture is an oft forgotten segment of Frank Lloyd Wright’s design output. Often, as is the case with his tall chairs, furniture was utilized to help delineate space in open plan interiors. Other times, as we see in the above writing desk, the design was fueled by functional needs. Space for letters, and all other items needed for traditional correspondence, is neatly appointed. The design first greeted the world in 1908, and now through Cassina the Meyer May Writing desk returns.

Bottega Veneta Leather Desk

selectism - Bottega Veneta Leather Desk

One of the things that impressed us most of Bottega Veneta in recent years was the addition of their home collection, which is always a real pleasure for the eye. Now, with the colder months in sight, their new leather desk is a perfect addition to any study. The right size, fantastic leather details and timeless. Exactly our kind of furniture.

Stockholm Desk and Cabinet

selectism - stockholm desk and cabinet

Typically one views Target as the big box with style and flair. However, the Stockholm set from Walmart does impress. Light veneer, white and orange accents. The metal feet give it a lift and make it just airy enough. For a taste of mid-century design without the typical cost, the Stockholm series works well. And, to be blunt, it is a bit of a surprise find. Thanks Retro to Go
