‘Homework Table’ – Accordian Desk by Nika Zupanc

homework desk 02 540x368 Homework Table Accordian Desk by Nika Zupanc

Nika Zupanc is the creator of this sweet ride-along kids car, so we’re already in. The Homework Table is basically an accordion style storage solution but it’s doubtful anyone is going to buy this for anything else than the wind up mechanism. Releasing a series of folders to stuff all you credit card bills and other assorted paperwork you’d rather ignore, at the flick of your wrist they’re gone again, returning this back to a flat desk.

Zupanc based the lacquered green laminate top on the school furnitiure of her youth, on the overall design she comments, “I wanted to introduce a certain type of elegance and emotion into furniture that is usually very technically dominated”. Job done. (AZ)

How often have you thought to yourself, the thing that’s missing from my desk is a little in-built foliage? Well rest easy: introducing ‘The Senescent Desk’ from love hulten. Huh magazine describes, “a self-sufficient gardening system based on a water tank, mist makers, two fans, and a growth substrate material made from recycled plastic.” If you spend most of your time sitting at your desk staring at a wall then perhaps a little greenery might just cheer up your daily drudgery.

We’ve talked staplers, pencils and fancy notebooks in past posts. Well you’re going to need somewhere to store these things, no point buying luxury stationary and throwing it the back of a cupboard. This handsome desk over at Schoolhouse Electric & Supply Co. is made in the USA; Portland Oregon to be exact. It takes its design cue from mid-century, danish design – all neat lines and uncomplicated form. A solid maple top is set off by those sharp walnut legs. At the front, a white drawer as well as extra storage, at the back an extra shelf to display all you high quality stamping, clipping and writing instruments.

High Design Desks

selectism - high design desks

Auctions are not only great for finding the best of the best (or alternatively some really cheap crap), but also as instructive events. Catalogs and public viewings are some of the best ways to get first hand experience with iconic design, and the mostfamous of artists. This is particularly true of modern decorative arts, which are often confined to museum storage rooms.

Phillips de Pury & Company is selling some great desks today. Included is the work of Marc Newson, Jean Pouve, Phillip Michael Wolfson and Gio Ponti. While it might be a touch late to jet to NY for the sale, the catalog is up on the website and totally worth anywhere from 20 minutes to several hours of your time.

(via Core 77).

See the desks by Pouve, Wolfson and Ponti after the jump.
