Selectism - Duckie Brown and Odin Launch Edward Line

WWD reports in on a new “collection” bringing together NY’s retailer Odin with Duckie Brown. “Edward, the collaboration between Duckie Brown and the influential boutique Odin, will launch Nov. 1. After the debut at Odin’s three locations, Edward’s four creators are hoping to expand distribution of the contemporary label. …Duckie Brown designers Daniel Silver and Steven Cox are known for artistic flourishes in their designer collection, but Edward … is a commercial endeavor, which takes cues from the merchandising insights of Odin co-owners Eddy Chai and Paul Birardi.”

Florsheim by Duckie Brown Spring/Summer 2010

selectism - florsheim-by-duckie-brown-spring-2010-01Duckie Brown’s interpretation of Florsheim’s shoes was a runaway success when they launched, so it’s no surprise that they’ve continued that great work with their SS10 collection. While these yellow brogues may be too much for the colour-phobic, they’re a perfect example of why the collaboration was a needed one. They incorporate the American style of brogue-ing with full grain leather and a leather welt – and they’re also yellow, which, admittedly, is quite the focal point. Elsewhere in the collection there’s also suede lace up shoes, loafers, saddle shoes and laceless brogues.

Take a look at the collection after the leap.

Selectism - Florsheim by Duckie Brown Plain Toe in Blue

Adding a bit of color to your footwear steez will do you well. They’re made in the USA (for you isolationists) and comes with the expected leather upper and wood heel. They will set you back just under 3 bills but you’ll have them forever. (ff)

Our friends at Valet spends some time with Ilaria Urbinati of Confederacy LA on the new Florsheim for Duckie Brown collection. ” ‘The whole point of a collaboration is to do something different and show a new take on a classic,’ says Ilaria Urbinati, the stylist and co-owner of LA’s Confederacy, who scored a two-month exclusive on the line. The collection includes revamped styles like Florsheim’s signature Riza loafer but Urbinati’s torn on a favorite. ‘It’s between the brogue boot, which looks like something Oliver Twist would wear and kick your ass in,’ she laughs.”

Duckie Brown Spring/Summer 2009

Duckie Brown’s Spring 2009 collection is as Mr. Blanks on men.style expresses, “Underpinning Duckie’s entire Spring collection were stretchy tops, bottoms, hoods, and little glovelets. The eccentricity of such a second-skin notion was compounded by a wide silhouette—echoes of David Byrne’s Big Suit. Boxily cut jackets were matched with trousers that were cut on the circle, or shorts that fell to below the knee.”

Breaking the Menswear Mold with Duckie Brown

Selectism - Breaking the Menswear Mold with Duckie Brown

The Washington Post published a great story on the design duo behind Duckie Brown,  Daniel Silver and Steven Cox, entitled “Breaking the Menswear Mold.” “The designers, who launched their label in 2001, have an affection for bold colors, unusual fabrics, sequins, embroidery and droopy crotches. The brand’s distribution is limited, as not a lot of men have the wherewithal to dress up in an ivory organza blazer such as the one from the spring collection. But its customer base is dotted with boldface names, and in 2007 Cox, who is British, and Silver, who is Canadian, were nominated for best menswear designers by the Council of Fashion Designers of America.” The story also mentions the coming Florsheim/Duckie Brown Collection as well as notes on the cotton and nylon trench coat shown above. Haute Concept reports that it is a showpiece only and not for retail. Bummer.
