Backstage | E.Tautz Autumn/Winter 2012

Backstage - E Tautz - AW12 - 12

Behind the scenes at E.Tautz Autumn/Winter 2012. Showing in the impressive, slightly eerie surrounds of the Freemason’s Hall in Covent Garden (headquarters of the United Grand Lodge of England), Patrick Grant hits the spot once again with his classic tailoring of the Savile Row variety. Inspired by Richard Serra’s imposing sculptures and the U.K Climate, he tells us;

“British clothmakers have a way of creating cloths of a substance that few can match, because our weather required them to do so. Serra’s drawings somehow called to mind these heavy British cloths: Cavalry Twill, Melton, Barathea. The cloths worn by our soldiers on parade, on the sort of day we get in London when the rain teams down relentlessly, the surface of their dense dark cloaks sodden and seeming to suck in all light.”

E. Tautz for John Lobb Oxfords

Selectism - john-lobb-e-tautz-oxfords-01

Those purveyors of elegance and excellence E. Tautz have collaborated with another elegance specialist in John Lobb. Made for Wallpaper’s ‘Handmade’ issue, it’s one of those collaborations we’re surprised hasn’t been made earlier. Costing £795, they’re available from the John Lobb store on 88 Jermyn Street. They also come with specially made shoe trees – and considering the price, they bloody well should do.

E. Tautz Sweater

E. Tautz Sweater

This E.Tautz camel sweater induces mixed feelings. It’s a great piece of knitwear – chunky, shawl collared, waffle knit. We like it, we want to wear it. Then follows the sadness when we realise that if we’re putting this sweater on it means it’s cold outside, those long summer days are over and we’re probably only in for 5 hours of daylight. Oh well, if we’re going into winter we might as well do it in 100% lambswool style. Find it at Matches. -ld

E. Tautz Golden Peacoat

Selectism - e-tautz-golden-peacoat-01

We’ve gotta say, this current menswear revival is in real danger of resembling a pimps convention. Wide brimmed hats, big lapels and bright colours? Sounds pimpish to us. E. Tautz have just fell into stores and this coat is the showpiece of the season for them. You’re gonna need to have some chutzpah in a coat this bright – you might have to watch the Mack as inspiration. (Mr Porter)

Patrick Grant’s E.Tautz Archive

Selectism - e-tautz-archive-01

We fear some people will be fatigued by the E. Tautz press juggernaught over the last few months, but Oki-Ni have a nice little feature on Patrick Grant’s archive of E.Tautz inspiration. Unsurprisingly, it includes a fair amount of vintage E.Tautz, but there are a few other pieces (such as a US Naval Peacoat) in there as well.

See the feature here.

E.Tautz Harrington Jacket

Selectism - e-tautz-harrington-jacket-01

In a surprising (to us at least) pickup, Oki-Ni are now stocking Patrick Grant’s E.Tautz. We’re not so crazy about the applique jumpers (we’ve never been fans of big logos, regardless of who does them) but this Harrington jacket is up our alley. We don’t blame you if the price tag puts you off though. (Oki-Ni)

E. Tautz Bowtie

selectism - e-tautz-bowtie

We’re just gonna come out and say it – we don’t like most of the E. Tautz collection. We’ve felt slightly obliged to like it because Patrick Grant was behind it but look at that sweater. We’re sure it’s made from the finest wool in the world, but the oddly placed logo looks cheap and tacky. We know what they’re going for, but the end result is decidedly Kitsune-lite.

Now we’ve got that outburst off our chests, we can focus on the parts of the collection we do like – like this bowtie. We don’t have much to say about the tie itself, it’s a bow tie – if you like it you wear it. It’s not rocket science. Just be grateful it doesn’t have a ‘kooky’ logo on it. (Matches)
