Michael Kluver – Sitting in Style

just chairs 1 Michael Kluver Sitting in Style

Michael Kluver’s design studio hews to what he calls “journalistic design,” which involves using “words, imagery and three-dimensional work” to comment on the world. Here, he reports on the way we sit with the re-imagining of four iconic chairs by Eames, Rietveld, Brewer and Mackintosh. The collection is called “Just Chairs,” and the cheekiness doesn’t stop there, for you see, each design has been wrestled back into the parameters of the most basic chair form imaginable. Each one is the same height, width, depth and angle—a design trick Kluver hopes will demystify the past and ask “important questions with regards to the future.”

So will we go back to sitting in rigid upright seats? Impossible to say. One thing is for certain, however, we won’t be sitting in any of these. The only things for sale here are 100 sets of prints of illustrations of the chairs; perfect for framing and admiring from a comfortable spot on your couch. (nalden)

eames film 01 Interview | Eames Film Director Jason Cohn

We featured the trailer for this much anticipated insight into mid-century’s pin-up couple a while back. While those of us still waiting for its release twiddle our thumbs impatiently, this interview with director Jason Cohn over at Imprint might just keep us going. “When you were buying a piece of Eames furniture, you were buying a little bit of that joie de vivre, the free and easy California lifestyle, that Charles and Ray represented to a generation of people,”

girard pics 01 Alexander Girards Personal Photo Collection

Nowness displays the personal photo collection of designer Alexander Girard. Featuring family and friends on their travels, these vacation snaps have clearly been taken with a creative eye.

Born in NYC, raised in Florence, Alexander travelled extensively throughout his life, picking up ideas and inspiration for his own work and adding to his vast collection of folk art now housed at the Museum of International Folk Art in New Mexico. Girard’s textile work for Herman Miller has become legendary in these mid century obsessed times. Having collaborated with the likes of the Eames’ and Georg Jensen, he stands alongside them in the 20 century hall of design fame.

James Franco narrates the new movie on Charles and Ray Eames. “Perhaps best remembered for their mid-century plywood and fiberglass furniture, the Eames Office also created a mind-bending variety of other products, from splints for wounded military during World War II, to photography, interiors, multi-media exhibits, graphics, games, films and toys. But their personal lives and influence on significant events in American life — from the development of modernism, to the rise of the computer age — has been less widely understood.”

Opens November 18 at the IFC Center in New York City. More info at First Run Features.

Herman Miller Eames Lounge and Ottoman in White Ash

Herman Miller Eames Lounge and Ottoman in White Ash

The classic Eames chair drops in a new non-limited “white ash” colorway. That is good news for the collectors that are looking for those special color options from Herman Miller. This one is accessible to all, as long as you can handle the $5780 price. Well worth it, we say. Some specs: “The cushions are individually upholstered. The veneers are 7-ply. The hardware fastens the cushions to the shells without marring the appearance of the wood… Both pieces are 29 percent recyclable, it’s more likely that you’ll pass these heirloom pieces on to another generation.” Truth.

Curated turns us onto this piece of news:

“Originally designed for children’s rooms in 1953, the Eames “Hang-It-All” rack has been reimagined by Herman Miller’s Selects Line. Colorful balls have given way to walnut, with the wire frame given a powder coat. The Eames developed the hanger during their experiments with mass production – later perfected in seating furniture.”
