“Cooper & Stollbrand has carved a reputation for itself as a leading manufacturer in men’s clothing, producing pieces for some of the world’s best known designers, fashion labels and Royal families. They sculpt and produce all patterns by hand and to this day use the same traditional, tried and tested techniques of the 1960s and 1970s to cut, make and finish all their garments. As much as we enjoy those folk soundtracked, atmospheric, slow fade factory tours, sometimes it’s nice just to be shown around a place and hear ‘that’s where we keep the sewing machines, this is how we make our goods.’ This straightforward  tour, produced by Style Ledger and brought to us via OEN, takes us around tailor Martin Greenfield’s Brooklyn premises. Informative, simple, an interesting insight behind the scenes with some accompanying chatter from the man himself.

Here’s a fresh factory tour from Red Wing angled by the Dutch Masters at Tenue de Nimes. Reason? “To discover first hand the deepest secrets  of the American, old school  production process. The factory is home to a hospitable team of employees, most of whom have worked at the Red Wing factory for nearly 30 years. All the craftsmen and -women ply  their own particular craft on the old machinery. Some of the Red Wing machines  were  patented in 1893 and have,  to this very day, not been replaced.”

Design Boom took part in an assembly line tour at Ferrari’s factory recently. The private Bentley Motors opened the doors of their Crewe, England factory to give us an inside look at how a truly custom and hand-made luxury automobile is produced.  From the stitching on the steering wheel and seats to the interior paneling, Bentley takes true care in ensuring that each and every detail found on their vehicles has been worked and inspected by their highly trained “family” of specialists and craftsmen and women.

While love and appreciation to detail in an automobile is often seen from the exterior first, today, we profile how the interior wood paneling inside all Bentley Motor vehicles are produced through a complicated process of materials sourcing and hand crafted design.

Allplaidout took the drive out to Ashland, PA for a factory tour of the Gitman Bros. operation and its slightly strange location. “The state-of-the-art Gitman Bros. factory is built into the basement of Sheldon Gitman’s former home. The ladies who work in the first and second floor offices — really just converted bedrooms — use the pea green tiled bathroom as one of their break rooms. ‘How often do you find a microwave on the master bedroom sink?’ One of the women quipped. They seem to love the quirky aspects of their surroundings.”

Think-Silly has a great photo essay from inside the Roberu Leather Fatory in Tokyo. “Located at the corner of a small street in Yokohama (Tokyo), a modest three-hundred-square-feet studio is the beginning of a label called Roberu.” The walk thru is available in English as well, so do not fear the linkthru.
