Casbia Footwear for Autumn/Winter 2011

The Italian-made Casbia line brings us some preview looks from their Autumn 2011 collection. Their William shoe, above, is an easy standout from a collection which uses a variety of textiles including neoprene. “The William style is adorned with natural feathers. In sleek, army-colored nubak and suede, William features an in-tone sole, providing the utmost comfort for the wearer.” I’m interested to see how this one looks on. More from Casbia soon…

Furni “Rockassins”

18 February 2011, 13.00 | Posted in Shoes | No comments »

selectism - Furni "Rockassins"

Canadian brand Furni might not ring a bell around these parts – the brand typically deals in clocks – but their latest special project, the “Rockassins” have great appeal. Produced by a 40 year old firm, a short drive from Furni’s Montreal base, the moccasins come in supple Brazilian leather and feature a crepe sole.

The price, we might add, is pretty good.

Selectism - high-end-shoes

Mr Hare turns us onto this interesting piece on the increase in high end mens footwear. The piece focuses on how there’s a growing change in menswear and that men are now prepared to spend a little more on their footwear. Here’s a quote from Mr. Hare about the footwear market.

“The market is there now,” argues Marc Hare, the designer behind Mr. Hare. “In part it is simply a reflection of men loving 3D structural things – next to watches, shoes are affordable craft objects. Blogs have helped raised interest enormously too. But there is also a generation that has grown up obsessed with sneakers that has now grown up too much for them – there’s a sartorial shift towards proper shoes.”

As someone on the ‘grass roots’ level of this shift in attitudes, if you will, we’ve definitely seen a massive shift towards shoes between now and even two years ago. We’ll be intrigued to see how it develops in coming years when folks realise you really can’t cheap out on shoes.

Full Looks at the Barbour for Rockport Boot Collection

We received a complete look at the forthcoming Barbour for Rockport Boot Collection. I think I may a bit more convinced on the collection after seeing the chukka boot and its low profile appeal.  Some specs: “Both Rockport (established 1971) and Barbour (estasblished 1894) have combined their long-standing design traditions to create a limited edition boot collection in three distinct styles: the Cap Toe Boot, the Plain Toe Boot and the Chukka Boot. … The Rockport x Barbour collaboration features authentic Barbour waxed cotton fabric, Barbour heritage tartans, Barbour hardware as well as an integrated adiPRENE by adidas footbed, which provides superior shock absorption at the heel strike.”  Look for the collection to hit stores in November.

Oliberte Footwear Adibo

selectism - Oliberte Footwear Abido

Hitting market this week, Oliberte Footwear’s Adibo, a crepe soled desert boot, looks pretty good, but has a far more handsome backstory.

Though based in Canada, Oliberte focuses its manufacturing and sourcing in Ethiopia, Kenya and Liberia. The intent of the company is to help support an African middle class, providing thousands of jobs and encouraging wider economic stimulus on the Continent. The Abido, for example, are handmade in Ethiopia.

There are, as you’ll be aware, a good number of ethical and socially conscious footwear brands. Whether the goal is to provide shoes for those in need, give proceeds back to environmentally damaged communities, or provide jobs where they hadn’t previously existed, we support good ideas.

More images of the Oliberte Adibo after the jump. Learn more about the company at Oliberte.
