Frank Gehry Designs Poster for the 54th Grammy Awards

Not happy creating incredible structures for the like of the Guggenheim Bilbao and The Vitra Museum, L.A architectural legend Frank Gehry has set about designing the poster for the 54th annual Grammy awards.

Architectural models surround the golden gramophone with the image appearing on all related media products. Gehry explains, “I have been fortunate to have worked with and become friends with some of the top musicians in classical music… they are my inspiration and my heroes. I am pleased to work with the grammys to help celebrate all of these talented people.” (designboom)

Frank Gehry Outside The Box Exhibition in Hong Kong

Think Silly gives us a local look at the Frank Gehry exhibition open in Hong Kong. “We have enhanced our living experience by mixing the vast range of mediums on offer and pushing our boundaries of creativity from the ways we manipulate space and materials. Canadian American Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry is one of the masters of this craft… By breaking the rules of traditional architectural blueprints, Gehry has emphasized heavily on the notion of creativity. With his expertise in quick thumbnail sketches and the help of present cutting edge technology, they have enabled his ideas to turn into reality successfully.”

Frank O. Gehry Since 1997

selectism - Frank O. Gehry Since 1997

DesignBoom has posted some superb images of models from the Frank O. Gehry Since 1997 exhibition now on view at the Triennale Design Museum in Milan. Focus is on work created after completion of the Guggenheim in Bilbao.

Given the confused layout of the recent exhibition focusing on the Lewis House (the project that allowed Gehry ample time and resource to explore the ideas that have become his hallmark), one can only hope that his one is a little better. That said, the material appears engaging and Gerhy’s efforts are always breathtaking.

Selected images of models of the Pritzker Pavillion in Chicago and Atlantis Sentosa in Singapore follow.

For months, Jeff’s cat has been begging for some more stylish furnishings to call his own. During those same months, Jeff has been begging the cat to keep its pesky claws off his fancy new sofa. With Everyday Studio, they can both win. The studio produces napping and scratching posts from double corrugated cardboard. They are highly influenced by Frank Gehry. (via Dwell).

Paul Goldberger, of The New Yorker, has posted his top 10 buildings of 2008. Included are Gehry’s Art Gallery of Ontario, the New Museum on the Bowery and (seen above) the China’s Olympic Stadium by Herzog and de Meuron. A few surprise selections, but for the most part those structures listed are those that really captivated. (Via DB).

The Art Gallery of Ontario has been hailed as “Gehry’s Somber Masterpiece.” A departure from his highly sculptural works with metal, the building’s focus is on light. A great complement to art, the city of Toronto gains a nice landmark from its most famous native architect. (Via Newser).

Frank O. Gehry: Design Process and the Lewis House

ghery Frank O. Gehry: Design Process and the Lewis House

Open now at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Frank O. Gehry: Design Process and the Lewis House explores the architects decade long commission (1985-95) for Peter Lewis’ home in Lyndhurst, OH. This project was critical in allowing Gehry to experiment and ultimately devise the geometric language that has become his calling card. What began as a remodeling job ended up changing the course of Gehry’s design process — and with it the face of some much loved public architecture.

The exhibition includes models, drawings and jewelry — all which help illustrate the Gehry design process. The exhibit runs until April 5, 2009. (VIa The Bee).

A few Gehry bits and bobs to wet the appetite follow.

Arts & Architecture, 1945-54: The Complete Reprint

selectism - Arts & Architecture, 1945-54: The Complete Reprint

In the world of reprints, Taschen has no equal. Their newest publication. Arts and Architecture, 1945-1954, is a complete run of the magazine for the 10 year period. The set is limited to 5,000 numbered copies. A comprehensive record of mid-century American Architecture.

From Taschen:

“From the end of World War II until the mid-1960s, exciting things were happening in American architecture: emerging talents were focusing on innovative projects that integrated low-cost materials and modern design. This trend was most notably embodied in the famous Case Study House Program, which was championed by the era’s leading American journal, Arts & Architecture. Focusing not only on architecture but also design, art, music, politics, and social issues, A&A was an ambitious and groundbreaking publication, largely thanks to the inspiration of John Entenza, who ran the magazine for over two decades until David Travers became publisher in 1962. The era’s greatest architects were featured in A&A, including Neutra, Schindler, Saarinen, Ellwood, Lautner, Eames, and Koenig; and two of today’s most wildly successful architects, Frank Gehry and Richard Meier, had their debuts in its pages. A&A was instrumental in putting American architecture—and in particular California Modernism—on the map. Other key contributors to the magazine include photographers Julius Shulman and Ezra Stoller, writers Esther McCoy and Peter Yates, and cover designers Herbert Matter and Alvin Lustig, among many luminaries of modernism.”

Gehry Table

03 June 2008, 21.58 | Posted in Furniture | No comments »

selectsim - gehry table

Architect Frank Gehry is best known for buildings cloaked in sculptural metal. The Guggenhiem Bilbao; the Gehry Tower in Hanover, Germany; and LA’s Walt DisneyConcert Hall are among the famed creations. Aside from buildings, Gehry has also designed furniture.

This table, made of corrugated cardboard with a glass top, is one of Gehry’s creations. First produced in 1973, the table is getting renewed interest, and is almost as interesting an experiment of material as Frank’s use of metal on buildings. (Ok, that is not completely true, the buildings are inherently more interesting, but using cardboard structurally is also pretty cool). At the end of the day, it is a a pretty robust piece and will stand up to years of abuse.
