We found this one on the living room table of a writer’s home – and it is a big one. Frank Lloyd Wright Designs: The Sketches, Plans, and Drawings Frank Lloyd Wright Designs Book is a massive tome coming this October on the Rizzoli imprint. As the title suggests, the book features one of the most comprehensive looks at sketches, elevations, designs, and mockups from the Frank Lloyd Wright studios. Students at Taliesin West have channeled the spirit of Frank Lloyd Wright (the schools founder) for a new experiment in prefabricated houses. Added to the principles of Wrights design are some green details – including rainwater harvesting and natural ventilation. The structure is 600-sq. feet, with a single bedroom. You may visit the prefabricated home until April 25 at Taliesin West. (via DWR).

Eugene Masselink (1910–1962) joined Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesan Fellowship in 1933 as a graphic designer and assistant to Wright. Known as Gene to his colleagues and Wright clients, he quickly became one of Wright’s most trusted protégés and one of the significant talents in the Wright office, producing decorative designs for interiors of many Wright commissions.

Masselink was born in Capetown, South Africa, and moved with his family to Grand Rapids where he grew up. He remained with Taliesan after Wright’s death in 1959 and died suddenly from a heart attack three years later in 1962. In recent years, the designs that he created for the Wright office have gained increased recognition. In 2006 the art museum acquired an important screen that Masselink designed for the Elizabeth Gordon House in 1956.

Eugene Masselink: Drawings for Frank Lloyd Wright opens tomorrow at Grand Rapids Art Museum. The Museum is the worlds first LEED certified museum. The eight drawings exhibited are on loan from Taliesan West, and this is the first time they have been displayed outside of Arizona.

Furniture is an oft forgotten segment of Frank Lloyd Wright’s design output. Often, as is the case with his tall chairs, furniture was utilized to help delineate space in open plan interiors. Other times, as we see in the above writing desk, the design was fueled by functional needs. Space for letters, and all other items needed for traditional correspondence, is neatly appointed. The design first greeted the world in 1908, and now through Cassina the Meyer May Writing desk returns.
