Some may know that the GANT line was started in New Haven just blocks from Yale University as well as the current GANT shop on campus. Today, the GANT line and Yale University shored up their love and connection with the announcement of the GANT Yale Co-op Collection, featuring oxford shirts based on the original designs sold inside the Yale Co-op during the 1960’s. Under the agreement, GANT will be allowed to use the Yale name on branding and marketing materials as well.

We share styled photo-looks of the new GANT Yale Co-op Shirt collection featuring Yale students and professors. The collection is available now through all GANT stores and limited shops across the globe.

GANT Rugger Autumn/Winter 2012 – Presentation Dinner

gant rugger fall 2012 presentation 04 GANT Rugger Autumn/Winter 2012 Presentation Dinner

Dinner and a presentation is how GANT presented their Autumn/Winter 2012 GANT Rugger collection. Inside the Lower East Side establishment, The Fat Radish, the GANT Rugger team under the guidance of designer, Chris Bastin, debuted the collection, inspired by New York’s “surging locavore, farm-to-table food scene.”  As Bastin puts it, ““Good restaurants are grounded in tradition, knowledge, craftsmanship and an internal drive to take the past and turn it into something better…  so is making clothes. A chef’s mis en place is like the designer’s fabrics. GANT Rugger is full-on foodie this season.”

The heritage theme of men’s sportswear still runs strong throughout the collection including Chesterfield coats, Fair Isle jersey crews and more. While the theme revolved around the “chef” and “restauranteur” the garments are clearly proper for all affairs.

One take-away from the GANT Rugger dinner was a gift bag which this writer did not open before arriving at a birthday party later in the evening where security was quite surprised to find a high carbon steel chef knife from Wildfire Cutlery concealed in my bag. I should have opened that bag sooner, it would seem.

GANT Rugger “Nouveau Prep” Spring/Summer 2012 – Campaign

GANT Rugger “Nouveau Prep” Spring/Summer 2012 - Campaign

We’ll be honest: the name of the new GANT Rugger collection or campaign sounds a bit forced. “Nouveau Prep” is meant to describe their new take on the prep look, so why not just call it “New Prep.” This is an American brand, right? Luckily, we can put aside the descriptors used in the campaign (which also include ‘dressy but messy’) and focus on the garments which do indeed offer more fitting cuts. The collection moves further along from the casual with the inclusion of oxfords (their standard), cut-off chinos, silk scarves and more. Inspiration comes from various ends including “downtown hipsters” and 60’s prep.

“Nouveau Prep” aside, we welcome the new direction from GANT Rugger. Available online.

Update: Rugger’s designer, Christopher Bastin, wanted to clarify the choice in the collection’s name. Here are his words:

The name “Nouveau Prep” actually has a nice story behind it. A blog (I believe it was the Bengal Stripe) referred to GANT Rugger as “Nouveau Prep” and it just stuck. I didn’t really think about it much until we began working on spring 12. Once I started getting the theme and ideas together, it really felt like a fresh take on things. Since I genuinely hate the phrase “preppy with a twist”, and, let’s be honest, anything with a bit of French in it is always kind of savvy, it became a natural name for the theme. Since then, I always refer to Gant Rugger as Nouveau Prep, and everyone seems to get it straight away. When vintage starts feeling cool again in like 8 years, perhaps we will call it “Prep Ancienne.”

Gant Rugger ‘The Downer’ Jacket

Selectism - gant-rugger-downer-coat-01

It’s fair to say that Cabourn’s influence is looming over menswear like, errmmm, David Stern over the NBA. While we’re sure this item takes no influence from Cabourn whatsoever, it reminds us of one of his designs. This Gant Rugger coat will act like Joe and do all the things a coat’s supposed to do-ooooo. It’ll do them for you. (Gant)

New GANT Rugger Shop Open at 25 Prince St

GANT Rugger opened the doors on their new locale at 25 Prince Street in NYC. The new space looks great and is twice the size of their Bleeker Street location. I personally like the fit and feel of the GANT Rugger line. Well priced too. Worth a stop in.
