Socks are fun 75-percent of the time, but when the heavy summer heat hits, nothing feels better than slipping your bare feet into a pair of light, breathable shoes. Sure, by the end of the day shoes with no socks get rather clammy, but there’s talcum powder and/or Febreeze for that. As we reported a couple of weeks ago, Steve Harrington has teamed up with Generic Surplus and Ace Hotel & Swim Cub Palm Springs for a whole pile of creative fun during the Coachella festival. That fun comes in the form of a pop up shop selling t-shirts, towels and some shoes designed by Harrington which is part of the hotel’s Desert Gold: Roadside Attractions event.

“Had wayyy too much fun installing the shop and meeting all the new faces,” Harrington tells us. “ODD Future, Girls, Mark Mothersbaugh, Real Estate and couple other bands rolled by. I made an instagram kaleidoscope to take trippy photographs through for viewers. Ace Hotel & Swim Club Palm Springs has enlisted L.A.-based artist and National Forest Design co-owner Steve Harrington for a novel concept, indeed. During the Coachella festival, Harrington will set up a poolside pop-up shop/trip-out room called “Roadside Attraction,” populated with festival essentials including a host of Generic Surplus Borstal shoes redesigned by Harrington.

There will also be tee shirts, tank tops, bandanas and towels as imagined by Harrington. “Just last summer I worked on a three day long art project out in Joshua Tree California. We needed a place to stay overnight to recharge and rest, so my introduction to the Ace Hotel in palm springs made for the perfect desert oasis,” Harrington says. “When Generic Surplus approached me to collaborate on the Ace Hotel project this year, it seemed like the perfect fit.”

Sounds like perfect pairings all-around will make for a welcome detour from the Porta-Potty lines.

Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man that he didn’t already have, but Generic Surplus has given Gerry Beckley, co-founder of seminal soft rockers America, a pair of smart, simple loafers he was ostensibly asking for.

We’re always in the mood for a loafer and this snappy collab, called The Beckley, proves no exception to our desires. Available in black or white leather with a leather covered EVA wedge and a hard bottom sole, these seem to combine an easy sharpness with serious comfort. We chased this one down after Mr. Day teased them on his column. The new range of sneakers from Generic Surplus for the Spring/Summer 2012 N. Hoolywood menswear collection are splatter-approved. “Embodying the season theme “Title Back” with it’s upper construction and vulcanized sole, the shoe displays a particular attention to small details with its thick cushioned insole and application of wax-treatment on the laces.”
