Selectism - glass-01-selectism

Curated turns us onto this:

“Architectural art glass, at one time limited to traditional stained and leaded glass, is being transformed by renowned artist Paul Housberg, who has taken modern glassworking techniques and adapted them to large-scale installations. Bringing passion and meticulous care to every project, Housberg creates exceptional art glass installations for public and commercial spaces across the country.”

Selectism - HERRLICHT Hand Crafted Wooden Glasses

For some of us, the essential accessory is not a watch, but eyeglasses. Buzz-Beat has turned us onto another wood fabricator of said accessory. “Since  designer Andreas Licht began to develop his first collection of optical frames some years ago, HERRLICHT has become a synonym for wood glasses. They combine design and craftsmanship with the qualities of the material in a unique way. In every HERRLICHT frame the individual grain of the wood is preserved much like the rings in a tree. By exploring the possibilities of the material Andreas Licht creates elaborate, beautiful frames.”

selectism - Albert Maysles Glasses by Barton Perrierra

Unlike me, documentary film maker Albert Maysles never had a problem with losing or breaking glasses. He’s said to have worn the same pair since the 1960s. The people at Barney’s have been big fans of the man’s work for years, following his moves, and feigning over his glasses. The obsession has led to a faithful reproduction of Maysles’ glasses, performed by LA-based Barton Perreira. Avaiable in both readers and sun glasses.

$25 from the sale of each frame goes to the Maysles Institute.

selectism - The Glass Industry in South Boston

Until I spent several years working with some of the mega collectors of Mt. Washington Glass, my interest in the glass industry and its breadth in Massachusetts was minimal at best. However, learning about the process of manufacture and the ties to American cultural history, I’ve become rather intrigued by the whole story.

Releasing in October, The Glass Industry in South Boston The Glass Industry in South Boston , is bound to satisfy a recent need for new research. The book was spearheaded by renowned appraiser Joan Kaiser, and covers Boston furnaces from 1811 to centuries end. Add to that the most complete pictorial history of Boston glass, and you’ve got a comprehensive tome.

Sound boring? Probably. But, don’t discount the glass industries roll in shaping America from art to lighting.

The Glass Industry in South Boston will be published by the University Press of New England.
