The Selvedge Yard points us towards the 21 Helmets exhibition currently showing at The One Motorcycle Show in Portland, Oregon. Custom, illustrated helmets designed by “noted weirdo artists” including Ray Gordon, Brent Wick, Gretta Anne and Cheyenne Sawyer. Pure white Bell Helmets play canvas to all kinds of off-beat creations. Makes you want to attack your nearest white surface with a Sharpie.

Designboom points us this work by Partrick Jouffret of Agency 360. Jourffret collaborated with engineer, Phillippe Arrount on concepts for these foldable bicycle helmets. The aim with the packaway helmet is to ease the number of cyclists who do not commute with one (as crazy as that sounds). Originally prototyped in 2010, the Overade helmets look to be headed to production this year.

You can’t buy a helmet if you don’t own a motorbike. We asked ourselves the question when we saw this. We wondered, ‘what if we buy it and just carried it around on our arm, nobody need know that our main mode of transport was an Oyster card’. Then we considered that, even if everyone else fell for it, when we lay our head down at night we’d be haunted by our Motorcycle lie, shamed by our unnecessary purchase. If you do own a bike then lucky ol’ you. Go out and grab this, the return of a classic. “Originally known as the Trackstar Super-Jet when it first appeared in 1958, the Super Jet, with its sleek  lines soon became a the #1 helmet amongst the Ton Up Boys of the day.” Find it at Lewis Leathers.

The Francs Bourgeois Pavillon by Ruby  is about my favorite helmet and it has nothing to do with France. It all comes down simplicity and color of the Ruby line. This is clearly not the first time we have discussed Ruby helmets, so it should come as no surprise that we hyper-focus on one of their various styles. You can see more of them over on Studiohomme, but we think this is the one to get.

A band-on load of new helmets from Les Atelier Ruby for Winter 2011. The collection keeps the same form factor as all their helmets but gets creative on the colors and patterns found on the exterior. Ruby make luxury mobility accessories, that’s fancy helmets to you and me. Brainchild of designer Jerome Coste, after six bike related head injuries and a stint at Californian motocross brand JT Racing he turned his attention to creating helmets that were both good looking and as safe as houses. The design is based on early styles (minus the chinstrap), however the technology behind them is thoroughly modern.

Using materials commonly found in the aerospace industry, carbon fibre to be exact, the brand has been able to make something incredibly light and incredibly strong. This being a ‘luxury’ product, much attention is paid to making them look impressive too. There’s a continuing range of styles as well as the opportunity to create your own custom helmet. Collaborations with Eley Kishimoto, which we previously featured, and Karl Lagerfeld are also available. Stay safe over at Ruby.

For the moto enthusiasts out there, TOD’s offer their head protection options – wrapped in leather. “TOD’s have launched a helmet as part of their latest expansion which has included ready to wear collections for both men and women, a larger selection of accessories and more recently sunglasses. All of their new lines stay true to their original and main craft which is shoe making. The Tod’s helmet is made of tough leather similar to that used for their shoes with a supple leather lining.” (sybarites)

The Borsalino family of hat makers have been in business since the mid 1800’s. They’ve been producing some of Italy’s finest fedoras for over a century while expanding their product line to include everything from perfumes, ties, and even helmets. Our friends at Materialiste FR report on the latest “Signature” Helmet collaboration from helmet maker Les Atleiers Ruby. Maison Martin Margiela is next in line for the treatment. “The hull is varnished carbon coated and then the White House with a broad brush to get a “Blanc de Meudon”, traces of many white, pure white, but imperfect, which is the universal signature Margiela.” Look for it in April.

We featured these motorcycle helmets a while back now, but as they’re available in Moschino’s online store now we thought we’d take another look. Moschino’s online store only opened recently and as of now, the men’s side is pretty threadbare – although as their men’s collection isn’t much to write home about, it’s not much of a loss.
