While it isn’t exactly Lou Reed taking Metallica by the hand, Richard Chai assuming the position of Creative Director at Filson presents a surprising pairing. We’re certainly not predicting a Lulu-esque fiasco, but we can easily picture a younger Reed stumbling confidently down the avenue in Chai’s breezy, androgynous creations. We can also picture James Hetfield pretending to be rugged in a pair of Filson’s hearty overalls. Here’s what Chai is saying: “Our partnership will be rooted in everyday wear—approachable with unexpected fabrications and details that are signature to my collections, all while staying true to the heritage of the Filson Brand.”

Bottom line: this should be interesting, so watch for a full showing this fall that includes a capsule collection of classic Filson jackets dipped in Chai. -jt

Red Wing showcases the collection that will land on European shores for Autumn/Winter 2012 here in Berlin. Fans of the heritage line will be impressed with the new boots, which includes a dual-pack for the Nigel Cabourn collection (one pair shown above). When we look at the accessibility of the products that get shine on Selectism, we may occasionally forget that while everyone can see these goods online, holding them in very hand may not be that easy to some. So it is important to reference goods as they deliver in special editions to some of the wide retail chains across the U.S.A – especially when they rival the look and durability of Red Wing’s  found in any men’s boutique.

There’s nothing like a Norfolk Jacket to make you feel like an extra from a BBC period drama.

Worn by hunters, Princes, Rifle Corps volunteers and nineteenth century cyclists, it still remains the ultimate belted blazer. Strangely though, for something which can feel very costume-y, as long as you steer clear of the knickerbockers it’s a rather easy jacket to wear. This one from Free & Easy’s Rugged museum shop is a particularly nice example. Elbow patches, football buttons, chin strap and pleated pockets. Edward VII would be proud.

If you history of street fashion going back as far as you can remember (for me that would be the 80’s), camo/DPM patterns have always been there. No matter where you lay – be it street-wear or the high end… camo remains a re-played device of the fashion world. It has not come and gone as a trend; the patterns, while re-worked and re-imagined, have remained  almost seasonal. Is there another pattern in fashion that retains such high/low appeal (and please don’t say stripes)?

While many will look at the “heritage” tagline against any brand with a raised brow in 2011, one cannot deny that a dash of camouflage seems to reset opinions. Take these pants from the Carhartt Heritage Autumn Winter 2011 collection: the simple chino breathes again with out much work. Sure, we’ve seen camo on slim-cut BDU’s and chinos before and we’re will to bet you will see them again. Goodhood has these.

R29 looks in on the new Kiehl’s New York Heritage collection that wraps their skincare goods in bottle embellished in black and gold in celebration of their 160th anniversary. “The range, made up of four steeped-in-tradition, customer-favorite formulas includes the Ultra Facial Moisturizer and Cream, the Calendula Toner, and Original Musk Oil (the most luscious and understated scent you’ll ever sniff).”

Back on Barbour for a moment: the line a wide offering that goes well beyond our favorites in the Beacon Heritage line. Take a look at their “Country Vintage” collection of fine garments with the appeal of a country/farmer lifestyle. You’ll note that Barbour has developed a unique camo for the collection which includes dogs, hunters, and salmon – all playing on the theme. The birds shirt is in there as well. They announced a new set of watches in both families including the BR S Steel and Heritage which at 39mm is the smallest in the AVIATION series. Beautiful watches if you are one of the few who can pull off the square face that makes Bell & Ross watches iconic.
