BBB | Barbour Heritage "Country Vintage" Spring/Summer 2012

Back on Barbour for a moment: the line a wide offering that goes well beyond our favorites in the Beacon Heritage line. Take a look at their “Country Vintage” collection of fine garments with the appeal of a country/farmer lifestyle. You’ll note that Barbour has developed a unique camo for the collection which includes dogs, hunters, and salmon – all playing on the theme. The birds shirt is in there as well. We’ll share more on that with our full look coming in a few weeks…

Usinger’s Sausage

curated mag - Usinger's Sausage

Usinger’s proudly puts the USA in Sausage.

Since 1880, Usinger’s has made sausage with the same family honed recipes on Milwaukee’s Old World 3rd Street. The firm began as a simple operation – Fred Usinger and new wife Louise (having just bought a butcher shop) worked 16-18 hour days to serve the demand of local tavern owners. Like all good American dream tales, Usinger’s grew quickly and gained the favor of Milwaukee’s German aristocracy and found fans as far away as New York City.

The above, clearly stripped down story, amounts to the basic who and how of Usinger’s. The what might be a little more complicated – it all depends on taste. Usinger’s makes a dazzling array of sausage. Bratwurst (a personal favorite), liver sausage, summer sausage, all types of sausage. And all very good.

Fancy trying some? Visit the Usinger’s webshop.

(Probably the best heritage brand in Wisconsin).

WWD – Fashion Brands Focus on their Heritage

Selectism - WWD - Fashion Brands Focus on their Heritage

WWD latest story proclaims that luxury brands are refocusing their offerings to pull from heritage roots (”Latin Roots” by Fugazi anyone?). “These days, Twitter enthusiast Louis Vuitton is far more likely to tweet about the 1896 launch of monogram canvas or the 1930 birth of its iconic Speedy handbag than which actress wore its clothes to a recent VIP event. It’s but one indicator that Europe’s big luxury players are moving heritage to the forefront of product and communication efforts as a way to reassure — and seduce — consumers spooked by recession.” It’s all cyclical anyways, isn’t it?

Grimsby Smoked Fish

selectism - Grimsby Smoked Fish

Having thrilled readers with the story of the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie earlier in the week, it seems appropriate to introduced another British food with Protected Geographical Indication Status. Grimsby, a seaport town in Lincolnshire, has a long and celebrated tradition of fish smoking. Recognized by the EU only recently, the techniques and heritage of local fish smoking now enjoy the same designation as Champagne and Royal Jersey Potatoes.

What makes their curing process different? While the majority of smoked fish today comes out of mechanical kilns, folks in Grimsby retain the traditional method of curing fish over the smouldering embers of burning wood chips. Firms  like Alfred Enderby produce smoked fish correctly, their towering chimneys producing cod, haddock, and salmon with a perfect balance of color and flavor. Additionally, we should note that Grimsby’s favorable geographic position allowed a cottage industry of fish smoking to develop – never forget the importance of location when asking “how come they do that there?”

Selectism would like to applaud the town of Grimsby for its dedication to heritage food production.

Ebbets Field Flannels Authentic Caps

selectism - Ebbetts Field Flannels Authentic Caps

Did Jay-Z really make the Yankee hat more famous than a Yankee could? Did I really just mention Jay-Z? So sorry.

With MLB play-off season in full swing baseball caps are once again on the mind (and head). For those with no defined allegiance to any competing team, or any outfit in pro baseball for that matter, there is an alternative to the everyday New Era. In truth, there are many. One example comes from Ebbetts Field Flannels, makers of exacting replications of uniforms from the sports by gone era. The 1940 San Francisco Seals of the Pacific League and the Detroit Cubs (an Independent Negro team) are just two of the offerings. The caps take to history in reviving memory of the teams and of manufacture. Not famous, like the teams of DiMaggio or Ruth, but nonetheless important in America’s sporting history.

Off the topic of caps (but remaining on the topic of baseball) Jeff once lived next to Fenway, Jason has likely never played the game, and I once caught two no-hitters on route to becoming a Little League all-star. I also grew up without a home team, so naturally gravitated to historic franchises.

Field and Stream

selectism - Field and Stream

While some of us on team Selectism are bored of work wear and “heritage” relaunch, others are pleased. I, for one, grew up wearing items from Filson and Woolrich (even when the cuts were crap and the materials a bit suspect), so seeing what I’ve always worn anyway repackaged doesn’t grate all that much. And, diversity of opinion is always nice too.

Field and Stream joins the throngs of “Americana” based brands with its relaunch. As Acquire notes, it’s the brand that outfitted Charles Lindberg on the first nonstop flight from the US to Paris. Field and Stream’s return focuses on two simple themes: American history and contemporary technical possibilities.

One thing that should be of interest are the price points (low), which are in keeping with the function over form looks. Head to the jump for trousers, jackets, and a few caps from the fall/winter collection.

Russell Moccasin Co. “Exotic Shoes”

selectism - Russell Moccasin Co. "Exotic Shoes"

The “exotic shoes” collection from Russell Moccasin Co. is perfect for nights out with ultra-liberal family members. “Kick it up a notch” (their words, not ours) with a Oneida Camp Moccasin crafted from Hippo. Elephant and ostrich are also popular materials in the line. For those that really want to show out, send in your own big game catch – Russell is a custom order company and  encourages customers to supply their own hides. Pick any shoe from the catalog, and they will provide you with trophy worthy footwear.

In all seriousness, the “exotic shoes” are a great reminder of Russell’s heritage as a real hunting outfitter. On a style note, some of these will make you look like an asshole. Then again, if you choose to wear them (for style) that is probably the point.

More “exotic shoes” after the jump.

B.D. Baggies Gets the Treatment

Selectism - B.D. Baggies Gets the Treatment

The trend cannot be stopped. American heritage clothing- an almost endless array of small labels and brands that produced top quality day wear – continues to grab the attention of the international market looking for fresher classic silhouettes to sell into their markets. B.D. Baggies looks to be the latest label to receive the re-introduction treatment. As reported by men.style, "W.P. Lavori—the same folks responsible for the Daiki Suzuki-helmed reintroduction of Woolrich Woolen Mills—which is bringing it back to the U.S. next spring. What to expect: washed poplin and oxford button-front shirts, and impossibly soft tees and hoodies, all designed by David Mullen, the man behind Save Khaki."
