Ryue Nishizawa – “Garden & House”

20 December 2011, 21.30 | Posted in Design | 2 comments »

Selectism - Nishizawa-house-garden-01

Architect Ryue Nishizawa recently completed this building in Tokyo. Built to fit in between two tall buildings, it’s invisible from the main road by ingenious use of plants and vases, making it look like an (extremely fancy) garden instead of a house. It’s the sort of thing we’d build if we had the space. Or the money. (Domus)

Vipp Annual Color 2012 – Copenhagen Green

Vipp Annual Color 2012 - Copenhagen Green

The Danish capital of Copenhagen is the inspiration for Vipp’s annual color for 2012. The shade of Copenhagen green is a tribute to the “ cityscape of historical architecture, with oxidized copper roofs and statues overlooking countless small, evergreen city oases.”

Copenhagen is also where Vipp has installed their first flagship shop. A variety of goods are available in the Copenhagen green including trash cans, dispensers and more. Well worth a look at the clean and simple design of the Vipp 2012 Copenhagen collection. ps: Vipp’s been in the business since 1939. Nice.

nicks picks Eight for the Holidays | Nick Schonberger from Complex

How we miss Nick… our old pal may have moved onto bigger and “better” things over at Complex, but we still keep in touch. An “Eight for the Holidays” allows us the opportunity to pick his brains about the very best in his world today – rather,  goods and items that he would love in his world. Like Mr. Yang’s eight items, Mr. Schonberger’s range give us a nice mix. Expect vinyl records, live mammals and more.

Slim Etagere Shelves

Selectism - slim-etagere-shelves-01

Notcot lets us know about these shelves. If we were more worried about being cool we might be concerned by our increasing interest in home furnishings. But we’ve never been cool, so we can write about shelves with reckless abandon. And yes, that is the only time you’ll ever see the phrase reckless abandon in an article about shelves.

selectism - Depozit Whiskey Tumbler

Erdem Akan the Depozit Whiskey Tumbler is made from a hand-cut recycled beer bottle. Considered it a green version of a classic, dare we say vintage, style tumbler.

The tumbler is part of Destination: Istanbul a MoMA-exclusive product collection highlighting lifestyle products from Turkey.

Newsprint Wallpaper by Lori Weitzner

Selectism - Newsprint Wallpaper by Lori Weitzner

For those who have had to remove old wallpaper from plaster, you probably swore up and down that you would never apply wallpaper. Admittedly, I am one of those people but after Design Milk posted their writeup on Lori Weitzner’s take on wallpaper, my opinion could very well change.  The wallpaper is made by weaving strips of shredded newsprint through a loom and finally backing it with paper for application. The looks is unique and one I would certainly consider applying them to my walls.

HERRLICHT Hand Crafted Wooden Glasses

Selectism - HERRLICHT Hand Crafted Wooden Glasses

For some of us, the essential accessory is not a watch, but eyeglasses. Buzz-Beat has turned us onto another wood fabricator of said accessory. “Since  designer Andreas Licht began to develop his first collection of optical frames some years ago, HERRLICHT has become a synonym for wood glasses. They combine design and craftsmanship with the qualities of the material in a unique way. In every HERRLICHT frame the individual grain of the wood is preserved much like the rings in a tree. By exploring the possibilities of the material Andreas Licht creates elaborate, beautiful frames.”
