Unbound Publishing – Tibor Fischer

22 December 2011, 12.00 | Posted in Books & Magazines | No comments »

unbound book 01 Unbound Publishing Tibor Fischer

It’s Nice That alert us to Unbound, a rather interesting concept in independent publishing. The spirit of consumer participation in mind, the idea is relatively simple: “Authors pitch their ideas directly to you. If you like what you read, you can pledge your support to help make the book happen. Everyone who supports an author before they reach 100% of the funding target gets their name printed in every edition of that book”.

Their latest release is a double bill from Tibor Fischer ‘Possibly Forty Ships’ and ‘Crushed Mexican Spiders’, two dark tales to squash any remaining Christmas cheer. The reverse/upside down design is a cool touch and it’s hard to argue with a concept that brings reader and author together. Plus it’s nice to see your name in print right.

Klaus Pichler – Skeletons in the Closet – Photography

Klaus Pichler 01 Klaus Pichler Skeletons in the Closet Photography

It’s Nice That alert us to the slightly sinister work of Klaus Pichler. The Austrian photographer is self taught, as his bio puts it ‘Klaus Pilcher has had no photographic education at all and he likes it this way’, fair enough. His ‘Skeletons in the closet’ project came from 3 years spent hanging out with the vast taxidermy collection at the Vienna Museum of Natural History. With an incredible amount of material at his disposable, he went about creating bizarre, sometimes comical scenes featuring these frozen creatures. Placing them in unexpected, often banal locations adding to the general air of strange and silly. More about Klaus here.

Geert Goiris’ Resonance Series

Geert Goiris 01 Geert Goiris Resonance Series

It’s Nice That introduces us to Geert Goiris‘ incredible landscapes. Eerie, cinematic spaces often devoid of human life, his Resonance series make us want to use phrases like ‘awe-inpiring’ and ‘monumental.’ ”Belgium-born artist Geert Goiris’ otherworldly portfolio takes a liminal position between landscape and still life. Working mostly with photography, the sometimes alien images are so composed as to appear unspontaneous but achieve instead a sublime level of observation and right-place-right-time uncanniness.”

It’s Nice That Issue #6

itsnicethat issue6 1 It’s Nice That Issue #6

New issue from the It’s Nice That collective always make my day. Must be the reference-like appeal of the simple rectangular image on the front against a solid spine. Yes, the little things. It’s Nice That Issue 6 delivers in a few weeks, July 14 to be exact.  George Lois takes the cover. You’ll also find features and interviews with New York based artist Lawrence Weiner, Danish photographer Asger Carlsen and gallerist Kate MacGarry. I’m most interested to hear Mikey Please’s take on the importance of  imperfection.

We hope, as It’s Nice That suggests, the promise of new prints bi-monthly holds true.
