SIHH Roundup – Ultra Expensive and Complicated Watches Timepieces

30 January 2012, 19.00 | Posted in Uncategorized | 3 comments »

richard mille watch SIHH Roundup Ultra Expensive and Complicated Watches Timepieces

Ben Clymer of Hodinkee gives us a roundup of the ultra-high end, high priced timepieces shown at this month’s SIHH show; many of which are of complications that are stunningly expensive.

I spent last week in Geneva at the Salon International De La Haute Horlogerie (SIHH). The SIHH is unlike BaselWorld because it’s held exclusively for brands owned by or associated with the Richemont group, a luxury conglomerate that owns the likes of Cartier, Vacheron Constantin, Panerai, and a few other high-end manufacturers. The trade show is unlike any other in the world – in fact, in any industry. It is very exclusive – only press and select retailers are allowed within its halls and the level of watchmaking displayed is unrivaled.

Expectations are always high for SIHH, but this year presented some truly exceptional timepieces at the high-end. Here are some of my favorite pieces, all of which really push the boundaries of traditional watchmaking…for a price, of course.

See more from SIHH after the jump.

Jaeger-LeCoultre's Reverso Watch for Mad Men

Hodinkee turns us onto a new special edition Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso which takes the classic watch first introduced in 1931 and gives it a 2012 step-back look in honor of the television series, “Mad Men.” The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Ultra-Thin Tribute To “Mad Men” has a run of 25 units and features the Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce logo hand-engraved on the caseback. A nice throwback in line with the number of cocktails and smokes the series’ characters throw back on the daily.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Memovox International Colette Watch

Selectism - Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Memovox International Colette Watch

Colette seems to work with the very best. Their latest collaborative effort with Jaeger-LeCoultre looks to be a massive one with an extreme limited unit count of three! “I do so very much appreciate that very special wristwatches often find their way in to the display cases at Colette.   Most recently it seems that Jaeger-LeCoultre has created a special Master Memovox International for the Parisian concept store.  It is part of a project by Thomas Erber and is named Cabinet de curiosité — a random collection of fine oddities.   Special about this watch vs. its “standard” brother is the light blue “Colette” notation on the dial and the matching accented stitching on the strap.” (perpetuelle)

We love a nice annual to collect the designs and thoughts of a brand. We like them even more if they revolve the intricacies of watch making. Let’s take our watch game back a bit to a time when travel alarm clocks were a staple in travel accessories. “From the 1930s, here is a travel alarm clock from Jaeger Lecoultre. If that wasn’t enough, this pop-up alarm clock was sold and signed by a small French retailer that goes by the name of Hermes.  This item has the destinct honor of being called by two terms that we adore “vintage Jaeger Lecoultre” and “vintage Hermes”.  So, so good.” Those were the days. Selectism - Jaeger LeCoultre Aston Martin AMVOX2 DBS Transponder

Engadget reports in on the new Jaeger LeCoultre Chronograph that will unlock the doors on your new Aston Martin DBS. "You know that Aston Martin DBS not sitting in your driveway? Here’s the watch to not go with it, the €27,500 (more than $40,000) Jaeger LeCoultre AMVOX2 DBS Transponder. First spotted last year, the Swiss timepiece capable of locking and unlocking the DBS from a distance of 10-meters has had a rough time making the transponder reliable due to the mechanical watch’s impact on electrical fields — a Faraday Cage of sorts"
