In 1966, Bobby Moore hosted the World Cup wearing a red shirt.

The England Away kit, despite many years of hurt, remains legend. Aitor Throup recognizes the heritage of English football and Umbro, and adds his own contemporary twist with a keen sense of human anatomy and ergonomics. As first look at the away kit, we share the above video. Throup discusses his process and the technical aspects that make his a unique take on the classic.

The shirt will officially launch at retail outlets on March 3, 2010.

Lanvin Jersey Cardigan/Jacket

selectism - lanvin-jersey-jacket

What do you call a piece like this? If you’re Browns you call it a jersey jacket one second and a cardigan the next. Seeing as it’s basically a cardigan with lapels, we’re gonna stick with the hybrid of cardigan/jacket. We would do a mashup of the two words (Cardet?), but fashion journalists are already in love with that practice – we don’t want to encourage them.

Oh yeah, the piece. As you’d expect from jersey it’s very soft. Given it’s Lanvin, they’ve managed to up the softness levels from ‘occasional-rubbing-of-garment’ to ‘If-I-had-to-live-in-a-shed-for-a-month-to-wear-you-I’d-do-it’. In conclusion, it’s pretty desirable. (Browns)

Journal Standard Jersey Cardigan

Time for our obligatory ‘you can’t get this without the help of someone in Japan’ post. This Journal Standard is made from what seems to be the growing material of choice, Jersey. Material aside, we also like the fact that it has a collar that isn’t shawl (we still love shawl necks by the way, but we can’t have our wardrobe overrun by it) and the contrast piping. Get it if you can from Style Cruise.

Take a look at detailed shots and different colourways after the jump.

Rapha Swift Jersey

rapha swift shirt 00 Rapha Swift Jersey

As I prep for my ride to the docks to watching the end of the Boston leg of the Volvo Ocean race, I wish I could substitute this white t-shirt for Rapha’s Swift Jersey. It just looks great and is perfect cycling wear for the 80-90F weather we’re experiencing in the Northeast of the USA today.

“Using a vintage jersey style, the black flocked silhouettes of swifts in flight on black makes for a beautifully understated and distinctive design. The cut is similar to that of other Rapha jerseys, using side panels to create a slim fit, and cut longer at the back. It has a classic ribbed neck and sleeve cuffs with a metal zipper to give it an old-school feel.”

Mjolk ‘Simonslouch’ Trousers

mjolk jersey trousers Mjolk Simonslouch Trousers

We’ve finally figured out what we don’t like about the pictures at ASOS. It’s the models. No offence to the guys – I’m sure they’re nice guys and all that – but they just don’t suit some of the brands they’re modelling. Although these are labelled as slouch trousers, they’re actually slim-fit jogging bottoms (aka the most dangerous trend out there). There’s plenty of room for these to go wrong but just treat them like trousers and you’ll be fine. Get them from ASOS.

New UMBRO England National Team Jersey

umbro england national team jersey front New UMBRO England National Team Jersey

In 1966 Bobby Moore hoisted the World Cup to a jubulant crowd at Wembley Stadium. That day, he wore red, but in the quarterfinals, the England Squad had been dressed in full white. Aitor Throup built the new England kit from this look, the heritage of UMBRO, and the notion of fusing traditional tailoring with a forward thinking of the athletes needs.

“I wasn’t inspired by a specific kit as such, but by the constructional details of specific features, such as the tailored collar on the early football kits.”

Today, as England takes on Slovakia in a friendly at the new Wembley, Capelo’s men will march to to the field in Throup’s creation. Fashion meets performance, and most importantly works to restore pride in the Three Lions shirt. Throup’s quest was to form a kit that players and fans alike viewed positively–something that related to strong traditions of manufacture and footballing glory.

“It’s about using the idea of style as a tangible performance enhancer. Something they can put on and feel smart, feel confident.”

In a time where the football shirt, with frequently changing sponsorships, has become largely ephemeral, UMBRO produces a shirt with potential as a new heritage item. A shirt that can be passed down through the generations. An item that can be worn without concern of looking out-of-date while hopefully improving the chances of winning a penalty shootout.

Enjoy our look at the new kit and check soon for our full interview with Aitor Throup.

acne jersey blazer Acne Jersey Jacket

We’ve been seeing a lot of jersey this season, both in stores and on street style sites. Acne have been pushing the tailored jersey look with pieces like this jersey blazer. This can be seen as a daring blazer to wear but if you just wear it like a normal blazer (as this fellow has done) and it’s guaranteed to bring new life to the now near ubiqitous rolled up blazer look. Get it from Matches.

This Edifice jacket is perfect for the upcoming spring days when any other coat would seem over the top. Get it from Style Cruise.
