Brown’s Beach Vests

browns beach vest 01 Browns Beach Vests

Japanese label J.S Homestead, part of Journal Standard, have received delivery of these amazing repros of the classic Brown’s Beach Vest. Anyone who’s searched for an original and found it will the know the pain of turning the price tag; the vintage versions go for a premium.

These exact replicas won’t have that spirit/smell of a bygone era about them but they’re pretty spot on down to the last detail, branded snaps and all.

journalstandard bb 01 Brownbreath for Journal Standard Bags

Ever reliable Japanese store Journal Standard have got together with Korean street wear brand Brownbreath to produce this capsule range for Autumn Winter 2011. Dyed canvas is washed through to give it that lived in look and used to produce two styles, the ‘Gravity Cross bag’ and ‘Discovery Waist bag’. Unlike most collaborative efforts this one has kept design minimal and is all the better for it.

Ben Davis for Journal Standard Blazer

07 October 2010, 13.30 | Posted in Fashion | 1 comment »

Selectism - ben-davis-journal-standard-blazer-01

Here’s something for the clothing sadists out there: it’s another piece from Japan that you can’t get your hands on without a proxy. All you proper workwear addicts know all about Ben Davis (for anyone looking to fake it, here’s a link to his website) and he’s teamed up with Journal Standard for a capsule collection. Our pick of the small bunch is this blazer – for obvious collar-related reasons. (Style Cruise)

Journal Standard Contrast Placket Shirt

Contrast collars and plackets are always risky business on shirts. There’s always the dreaded risk of looking ‘zany’; This Journal Standard shirt avoids that trap by using some tastefully contrasting patchwork madras. As a detail, It’s hit and miss – the white and blue colourways are proof of this – but when it works, it’s a very nice touch. As usual, get your proxy on.  (Style Cruise)

Journal Standard Chinos

Here’s another piece you’ll have to travel through shark-infested to get your hands on (or pay a proxy). Journal Standard have released an updated version of a chino we featured aaages ago, but the reasons we like it are still the same: that gingham lining. We’re bamboozled as to why more companies aren’t doing this, what with rolling your trousers being hot stuff and all that. Sure, there’s a couple out there, but not enough. Anyhoo, these are purdy, come in three colourways (green’s our favourite) and only available to those with the patience of a saint and the email address of a proxy. (Style Cruise)

Journal Standard High Neck Cardigan

selectism - journal-standard-high-neck-cardigan-01

Journal Standard have clearly got their eye on the ball, as they’ve come out with a high neck cardigan. You’ve probably heard enough ranting and raving about the topic from us so let’s just stick to why we like this cardigan (aside from the obvious). The first reason is because it’ll double up well as a jacket come spring (you remember those, right?) and the second is because, erm, it looks good. We’re simple folks and sometimes good looks is all we need. And a proxy. (Style Cruise)

Journal Standard Toggle Cardigan

03 November 2009, 14.30 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

selectism - journal-standard-cardigan-01

Everybody’s in love with toggles this season. We’ve seen a fair few cardies with toggles on them, but this JS one stands out from the crowd. It’s not just the toggles, it’s not just the shawl collar and it’s not just the cable knit-esque pattern. It’s the combination of all three. If we had to pick a bone, we’d make the toggles beige or tan, but that’s just us being finicky. Like most JS pieces, you’ll need a proxy to get on this. (Style Cruise)

Lee for Journal Standard Jacket

28 October 2009, 16.30 | Posted in Fashion | 1 comment »

selectism - lee-journal-standard-jacket-01Lee, who’ve usually been the slowest to react to the heritage boom, have teamed up with Japanese company Journal Standard to create a workwear-influenced capsule collection. Consisting of four pieces in total (two jackets and two jeans), the collection has just dropped online.

As you’d expect, the availability won’t go beyond Japan. We do wonder why companies bother making pieces like this limited to a specific region, especially when you conisder the global village the world is now. That aside, this jacket is our favourite piece from the collection and could easily slot into any guy’s wardrobe – providing you can get hold of it in the first place. (Style Cruise)

Journal Standard Check Varsity Jacket

22 October 2009, 17.30 | Posted in Fashion | No comments »

selectism - journal-standard-varsity-jacket-01

Check patterns are everywhere. That much is fact. So it’s always a pleasure to find them used in interesting and unique ways – like on this varsity jacket. Leather arm aficionados (a niche group if ever there was one) won’t be into the wool arms, but they’ll definitely keep you toasty during the winter months. Add in the high collar and you’ve practically got a scarf – so you won’t need one of those gawd forsaken snoods everyone’s writing about. Get your proxy on. (Style Cruise)

Journal Standard Shawl Collar Vest

File this under ‘reporting not recommending’. We’re intrigued by this sleeveless chunky cardigan. It’s as close to a knitted gillet as we’ve seen and we kinda like it. We wouldn’t bet our houses on a piece like this, but it could easily work if done right (like in the picture above). [Style Cruise]
