Lars Andersson Autumn/Winter 2012 – Black Metal Serfwear

Andersson 1 Lars Andersson Autumn/Winter 2012 Black Metal Serfwear

We’ve noticed professional skateboarder and loveable fashion buttinsky Chad Muska rolling about in silhouettes like these for a while now, so some of the initial shock in Lars Andersson’s Autumn/Winter 2012 collection rolls right off. What remains are some truly artisanal pieces of knitwear that have enough mutability and variety to suit multiple tastes. A Swedish designer who focuses on knitting, Andersson works with his team of knitters in Brooklyn, turning fine Japanese and Italian yarns into what could be uniformly described as “black metal serfwear.”

The tank top makes us immediately think of a discotheque in an old smithy and if we went the route of the hooded vest we’d maybe throw a t-shirt underneath, but the crew neck sweater and the hoodie are practical statement makers without an over-sized exclamation point. Big bottom line here: if we ever decide to move off-grid to work on our pagan drum circle band and kill rabbits for dinner, you’ll never see us in anything but the hooded coat pictured above.

Lars Andersson Linen Cotton Cardigan in Black

Swedish born, Lars Andersson, comes to us with his Spring 2011 collection of handcrafted knitwear for men. Each garment is produced in his studio in New York City. This cardigan is knittted with 80% cotton and 20% linen to allow for a very “relaxed fit.” There is a “2 inch roll back shawl collar and two flat front pockets.” The piece fits slim and offers a 3 inch tight knit cuff. A new comer to menswear with an eye for craftsmanship that’s dedicated to New York living with a Swedish approach. Blackbird has them.

Lars Andersson goods are now available via Blackbird Seattle. The Swedish designer’s first menswear collection is “made up primarily of beautiful knits in his already-signature style.” Amazingly, each garment is handmade by the designer and his team. Something to talk about! This striped long sleeve t-shirt would probably not usually make it solo onto this site but seeing as it’s a handmade beauty, we could not pass it over.

Lars Andersson Spring/Summer 2009

Selectism - Lars Andersson Spring/Summer 2009

Some are talking invasion when discussing the number of Swedish designers making new homes in New York City’s surrounding burroughs. It is by all accounts a very good thing for the fashion world. Scandinavia is on top at the moment with its focus on menswear and the modern movement of minimal looks with high construction values. Lars Andersson is no exception to this. He is Swedish and has resided in Brooklyn for four years where he has worked on his collection of urban knitwear with a knit staff of five. His collection for Spring/Summer 2009 is described as "at once sophisticated and rough."
