Goyard branches out its highly sought after luxury line of goods to the UK via a new store opening this Summer in London. The London store will now sit prominently against a map of luxury cities including Paris, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Beverly Hills, and others. The Goyard brand is considered the icon in luxury and to many, as it’s presence has remained niche and highly elusive.

The Brit Insurance Design Awards have opened at London’s Design Museum. Included are some obvious bits – like Shepard Fairey’s Obama portrait – and a few surprises. One inclusion that really excites are the hand built wooden radios by Singgih S. Karano. Category winners are officially announced in two weeks, with the prizes handed out on March 18, 2009. margiela london store Maison Martin Margielas New Doors in London

Four years after opening their first store in London, Maison Martin Margiela moves across the street into new digs at 22 Bruton Street. Like all Margiela shops, the space itself becomes part of the display as care is taken in respecting the building’s original form and turning it into a “found object.” “The atmosphere of this shop, adapted and decorated by Maison Martin Margiela, also draws on the prolific and iconographic use of whites – of furniture, objects, fabrics and textures, old and new – typical of the spirit of the Maison Martin Margiela’s Paris.”

Selectism Columnist, Kyle Hackett, turns us onto Hackett of London’s Bespoke Selvedge Denim in his continuing hunt for denim. Details are the charmer on these slim fit jeans made from 13.5oz selvedge – the back pocket has a nice red stitched “H” while the selvedge end shows through on the front coin pocket. Thanks for the heads up, Kyle.

A good exhibition isn’t just about the objects and analysis. There is a heavy degree of design savvy required to make things hum. It’s Nice That hips us to London’s Bibliotheque Design, the firm that devised the label system for the V&A’s Cold War Modern. Bibliotheque has recently updated their website, which now includes a section devoted to their portion of the project. From both a museological and design point of view, “it’s nice that” they’ve taken the time to explain their steps and rational.

A few more examples of Bibliotheque’s work for the V&A follows.

The Tate Modern’s Rothko exhibition opened on September 26. Revolving around Rothko’s later works, and his works in series, the show explores his strategies of repetition and variations on single themes. Complementing the on-site is a well conceived web portion complete with gallery talks and interviews with the curators. The best of this comes in the sense of process gleaned from the interview. A great thing when museums unveil the curtain and join the visitor in the excitement of putting things together.

Rothko is open until February 1, 2009.

selectism - Taschen Store London By Philippe Starck

Taschen expands their empire and recently opened their new London flagship store. Designed just like all their other stores by superstar designer Philippe Starck, the store of course turned out pretty nice and houses a book store and gallery.

“TASCHEN is delighted to announce the opening of its London store today, 6 October 2008. Located on the newly developed Duke of York Square, just off the Kings Road, right next to the new Saatchi Gallery, the store will stock the entire range of TASCHEN books covering art, photography, architecture, film, lifestyle, travel, pop culture and sex.  The London store follows the huge success of TASCHEN’s five stores around the world, in Paris, Cologne, New York, Beverly Hills and Hollywood.” Via Dezeen.
