It’s Sunday. I’m on my way home for a long overdue roast dinner. I can’t decide what to wear. My folks haven’t seen me since I moved to the city. In the time I’ve been away I’ve become fancy, elegant, a real snappy dresser. I own a Hermes belt. It’s my favourite. I hope it’s lamb, mum always overcooks pork and with lamb you get the option of mint jelly or mint sauce. Hope dad doesn’t ask too many questions about what I’ve been up. Hopefully my outfits will reassure him that I’m moving up in the world. Look at my belt. I’m going places.

Swim trunks/briefs/shorts force you to make a statement about yourself. After all, this is the closest you can get to nakedness in public, and there are swimsuits that can fit just about any level of modesty—or lack thereof. Rizzoli is set to publish this new book that highlights and examines the work and influence of Marc Jacobs on the Louis Vuitton house. Louis Vuitton / Marc Jacobs: In Association with the Musee des Arts Decoratifs, Paris examines Vuittons long history from 1854 to the present. Never before seen examples of Vuitton’s work and craftsmanship are reviewed in each chapter.

The latter half of the book looks at Marc Jacob’s roles as Vuitton’s creative director – a position he has held since 1997. Jacobs took the “house into a new era with a series of collaborations with artists and designers—such as Takashi Murakami, Richard Prince, and Stephen Sprouse—as well as designing a line of highly successful and desired clothing for the company.” The 308 page Louis Vuitton / Marc Jacobs book arrives April 24. Bear with us on this one. We know that for many of you, slapping a shiny gold tone metal plate onto a perfectly good pair of Marc Jacobs oxford shoes is the kind of shoe sacrilege that makes you want to throw your George Cleverleys at the screen. In many ways it is wrong. The strongest case being that yes, these are indeed a perfectly good pair of oxfords. In fact, they are a great pair, sitting on the right side of slim and substantial whilst keeping detail (heel aside) to a minimum.

The fact is though, sometimes you feel like putting snobbery aside. We stare at endless pairs of shoes, good, bad and ugly, in order to bring you the latest. Whilst our hearts skip a little when we see those bespoke classics, in all their rigid, conformist beauty – we can’t help but fall for the sheer defiance and bloody mindedness of this slightly silly shoe.

An understated piece of quilted outerwear from Marc Jacobs. This one is reminiscent of those classic Eddie Bauer ‘Sunset’ label jackets without the ‘blizzard proof’ guarantee. A military feel with the grey/green tone, it features elasticated cuffs and collar, fly front, press studs and zipper. The fit is on the slim side, a good way to go with anything padded to avoid any Kris Kross associations.

Part of the Spring 2012 collection, this jacket isn’t one for arctic conditions so layering is advised. Find it at Oki ni.

WWD delivers these look at the ready-to-wear collection from Marc by Marc Jacobs for Spring/Summer 2012. As they mention, “For his male counterpart, Jacobs struck a similarly purist note with a more sophisticated, grown-up aesthetic. Looks included slim-fit tailoring in fiery hues like red and green, utilitarian parkas and a looser Warwick plaid overcoat.” Casual, again.

Section E of the The New York Times tomorrow (June 2) features a story on the history and career of Marc Jacobs. The title “The Survivor” seems to lay it out for the reader. The following excerpt is strong:

“You can live with the love, you can live with the hate,” Mr. Jacobs said the other day at his office in SoHo. He had placed his arms squarely on a wooden conference table so nondescript it might have been salvaged from a high school’s teacher’s lounge. “We’ve been bankrupt, we been fired,” he said. “We didn’t hang up our hat.”

The Marc Jacobs team shows us their new collection for Spring/Summer. This 100% lamb “leather jacket with a pop pocket detail” has a knit waistband and cuff. The garment comes in a granite colorway and has the washed leather that gives a really interesting hue to the fabric.
